Suburban Neighborhood in Bristol, Rhode Island
Bristol County 02809
The view is good from up here: the neighborhood of Mt. Hope is the highest point in Bristol County, a place typically known for sea level lifestyles. But there’s more than interesting geography here: Mt. Hope is also full of history, and with downtown Bristol to the west, there’s plenty of entertainment to be had. Plus, there’s a strong academic streak to Mt. Hope.
“You’ve got Roger Williams University bordering Mt. Hope to the south, so the college is integrated with the fabric of the neighborhood,” says Stefanie Carr, a Realtor with Lila Delman Compass.
When it comes to housing, you’ll see diverse styles, with prices starting around $600,000. Some of the housing stock feels quintessentially New England, with midcentury Cape Cods being a standout example. Some of these will have renovated interiors, but comparatively large lots are the norm – yards can easily be more than a quarter acre. But Mt. Hope is still suburban, with homes neatly arrayed along streets dotted by mature trees. If you expand your search into the $800,000 range, homes built during the 2000s begin to come into view. For example, you might see a four-bedroom ranch that sprawls across 2,500 square feet on a 2-acre lot. And speaking of views, some of these properties are within a stone’s throw of Mt. Hope Bay.
Dependable schools are a draw for the area, and they enhance the academic atmosphere of Mt. Hope. Colt Andrews Elementary enrolls 300 students in grades K-5, and has a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Niche gave the school a B-plus in the academics category and a B overall. Kickemuit Middle has the same student-teacher ratio, but is much larger, with nearly 700 students enrolled in grades 6-8. Still, like with the elementary, Niche gave the middle school a B-plus in the academics category and a B overall. Mount Hope High enrolls over 900 students at the 9-12 grade level, but maintains a 14 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Niche gave the school a B in clubs and activities, a score helped by the marching band’s star role every year in Bristol’s Fourth of July parade – the country’s oldest.
The big outdoor destination here is Mt. Hope Farm. On this historic 127-acre estate, you can enjoy gardens and walking paths every day of the week, free of charge. A farmers market is held year-round, and a tour app is available for smartphone users who want a deeper dive on their visit. Brown University manages the land where Native Americans once held meetings —including a quartz rock formation that served as the head’s “seat”— but farm visitors can get a one-hour pass.
State Street feeds into the neighborhood, and you can easily take this to downtown Bristol. For a community hotspot, swing by Borealis Coffee Company – you can’t miss the rugged brick building. Inside, the modern industrial vibes continue, with exposed beams and sleek lamps. Try something innovative on the menu, like a Honey Rose Latte, brewed with rose petals and clove honey. You can then take Hope Street, also known as Route 114, a few minutes north to everyday conveniences like a Stop & Shop supermarket and Walgreens.
Mt. Hope is a peaceful suburb for people who crave a dash of history and community.
