Allerton
Urban Core Neighborhood in Bronx, New York
Bronx County 10467, 10469

A small selection of co-ops, condos and multifamily houses for buyers
Brick-clad, mid-rise apartment buildings are the primary form of housing—over 80 percent of locals rent. Still, homebuyers will find a small housing stock that varies by location. One- and two-bedroom condos and co-ops are located near the Bronx Park to the west. Co-ops typically cost between $150,000 and $215,000, while condos can sell for as much as $359,000. Multifamily houses are found east of U.S. 1, a main thoroughfare that bisects the neighborhood diagonally. These brick homes typically have a garage and stairs leading to a porch on the second level. Prices range from $385,000 to $1.2 million depending on size. A small number of detached, single-family colonial revivals are present, though rarely available. When they are, prices are between $525,000 and $825,000. In the central and southwest areas, the Pelham Parkway Houses include three NYCHA affordable housing complexes.Local businesses thrive along Allerton Avenue
Allerton has several commercial pockets, but the busiest is located along Allerton Avenue, namely the seven blocks between Barker Avenue and Matthews Avenue. Small businesses like florists and salons sit between banks and gyms. Residents frequent a vast selection of locally-owned restaurants and dozens of beloved delis. Roma Pizza is the go-to spot for a slice, Halal Chandni Chowk serves flavorful Pakistani dishes, and Latin Fusion adds a Dominican spin across its menu. Residents can buy groceries at a Key Food, Foodtown and Food Choice Market, or at specialty markets like American Albanian Deli-Grocery or Starcity Fruit & Vegetable. About 1 mile east, the Mall at Bay Plaza is the city’s largest shopping center with over 150 retailers, restaurants and entertainment options.Green spaces attract New Yorkers across boroughs
One of the borough’s main attractions, Bronx Park, acts as Allerton’s western border. The 718-acre park includes two iconic gems: the Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Gardens. Both are ticketed, but on Wednesdays, city residents can buy a reduced-fare ticket for the zoo or visit the garden for free. The park’s eastern perimeter also has free amenities, including Waring Playground and Reiss Field to the south, as well as a skate park and soccer fields to the north. Paved paths connect the two, winding through a peaceful, wooded stretch. Allerton’s south border is yet another narrow green space, flanked by one-way roads: Pelham Parkway is a 109-acre strip where residents walk their dogs, go for a stroll or bike. Neighborhood children frequent two urban playgrounds, Allerton and Mazzei, while residents and visitors alike visit St. Lucy Roman Catholic Church for its replica of the French Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, believed to be a place of healing.A large selection of public schools in the area
Allerton has one elementary and two middle schools, as well as the combined P.S. 89 Bronx, which earns a B-minus from Niche. Students may attend one of five high schools. The B-plus-rated Collegiate Institute for Math & Science offers a rigorous academic curriculum, while the B-plus-rated High School of Language and Innovation enrolls English language learners who recently moved to the States. Two private schools, St. Lucy’s School and St. Catharine Academy, are located in Allerton, as well. Two subway lines and several buses serve the neighborhood
Residents can access either the 2 or 5 trains, located in the eastern and western sections of the neighborhood. A trip to Midtown Manhattan takes about 1 hour. Locals may also use five buses, including the express bus which runs to 27th Street in Manhattan. Drivers can access U.S. 1 in the neighborhood or Bronx River Parkway just west. Interstate 95 and Hutchinson River Parkway are about 1 mile east.
