Baychester
Urban Core Neighborhood in Bronx, New York
Bronx County 10469
Buyers will mainly find townhouses and multifamily homes
Baychester’s architectural makeup is more homogenous than other Bronx neighborhoods. Brick-clad townhouses and multifamily buildings with colonial revival facades are the majority. Townhouses typically cost between $475,000 and $665,000, while multifamily buildings range from $570,000 to $1.3 million. A handful of traditional single-family houses are present, as well, with prices ranging from $410,000 to $1 million—most are smaller than the average American house: roughly 1,600 square feet compared to 2,000 square feet. Residential properties are tightly packed, but many have small backyards and garages, a big perk in the city. Much of Baychester’s housing stock was built in the mid-1900s, so it’s common to see buildings in need of renovations. One local park with amenities, plus large parks close by
Though the area used to be pastoral land, Baychester is now entirely developed. Besides Cavanagh Triangle, a tiny pocket park off Gun Hill Road, Haffen Park is the only green space in Baychester proper. It encompasses three square blocks and includes athletic courts and turf fields, a playground with splash pads, running paths and a community pool that draws long lines in the summer. The Northeast Bronx YMCA is less than a mile north and opened its doors several years ago. Housed in a striking modern structure, the state-of-the-art community center offers reasonably priced memberships. Just north, Seton Falls Park is a 30-acre, preserved forest area with trails and a manmade waterfall. Residents across the Bronx enjoy Pelham Bay Park, located about four miles east of Baychester by car. Three times the size of Manhattan’s Central Park, it’s the city’s largest green space. Amenities are plentiful: there are miles of paths and hiking trails, playgrounds, golf courses, athletic fields, lawns and kayak launches. Orchard Beach is the park’s crown jewel. For more family-friendly adventures, locals can head a couple miles west to the Bronx Zoo or New York Botanical Garden inside Bronx Park.Caribbean eateries and auto shops line the southwest corner
Two of Baychester’s borders, Gun Hill Road to the south and Boston Road to the west, are busy commercial corridors. Both have auto shops, car dealerships, markets and services like braiding salons and laundromats, but there’s also a stellar collection of locally-owned Caribbean eateries. Locals rave about the home cooking at Jess Town & Country Cuisine, Central Caribbean Bakery serves authentic Jamaican patties and Code Red Restaurant & Lounge is a go-to for happy hour or large parties. For retail shopping or chain restaurants, residents visit the Mall at Bay Plaza in neighboring Co-Op City. As New York City’s largest shopping center, the mall has over 150 retailers, including department stores like Macy’s, big-box stores like Nike, an AMC theater and restaurants like Olive Garden.Locals can access major highways, several buses and one subway line
U.S. 1, called Boston Road locally, and Interstate 95 act as the neighborhood’s western and eastern borders, respectively. The 5 train runs through Baychester and makes express stops during rush hours, allowing residents to reach Grand Central Terminal in 45 to 60 minutes. Locals also utilize the eight bus lines that serve the area.Students attend schools in neighboring areas
There are no schools in Baychester proper. Several elementary schools are nearby, including the A-minus-rated P.S. 153 Helen Keller in Co-Op City, the B-plus-rated P.S.169 Baychester Academy in Edenwald and the B-rated P.S. 121 Throop in Pelham Gardens. J.H.S. 144 Michelangelo, the nearest middle school, earns a B from Niche. Harry S. Truman High School is also nearby. The school earns a B-minus from Niche and offers unique programs like computer science, culinary arts and legal studies.
