Peaceful neighborhood near a park, beach and boardwalk
Gravesend is a diverse, family-oriented community in South Brooklyn that benefits from its close proximity to Coney Island’s beach and amusement park. Though the name might be a deterrent, one theory claims that Gravesend is named after the Dutch word for “Count’s beach.” The area also offers a blend of coop buildings, new condo developments and multifamily homes. “It's becoming appealing to a lot of new buyers because Bay Ridge has gotten more expensive," says Jerry Minsky, a Brooklyn native and Douglas Elliman agent. Scenic Ocean Parkway is another draw, a five-mile-long, tree-shaded path that leads down to Brighton Beach and the Coney Island Boardwalk.

New condo buildings for a good value
Housing runs the gamut from high-rise, postwar coops and new boutique condo buildings to semi-detached homes and large single family. High-rises are more common here than other South Brooklyn neighborhoods and congregate around Cropsey Avenue, making it possible to nab a unit with Verrazzano Bridge views. A two-bedroom in a new condo build lists for around $750,000. Prices range from $200,000 for a coop to at least $800,000 for a three-bedroom rowhome; the overall median is closer to $1.2 million. The higher end accounts for detached and semi-attached homes. Some of the most desirable homes line the wide sidewalks of Ocean Parkway, designed by Frederick Olmsted, best known for Central Park. These homes tend to be ornate and single-family, but they rarely come on the market.

Have lived in Gravesend for the better part of 10 years. A great pocket neighborhood outside of Manhattan, quiet with little night life. Not a ton of food options, but relatively safe.

86st and Kings Highway are the go to shopping area for groceries, banks, and technology. While Bensonhurst is the more well know brother of Gravesend, Gravesend is quieter.
