Irish culture thrives minutes away from Downtown Buffalo

Known as the Irish heritage district and just 5 miles from Downtown Buffalo, Abbott McKinley is a small neighborhood big in history, boasting easy access to nature. Locals can partake in Buffalo's highlights on a whim — shopping, entertainment and fine dining — then come home to local comforts. "We think of Abbott McKinley as our little neighborhood, but it's still part of the city," says local Realtor Mary Clare Hourihan of Hunt Real Estate. "It is very walkable, with restaurants, coffee shops, parks and schools in your backyard."

Vintage Cape Cods fill Abbott McKinley

Abbott McKinley was settled by Irish immigrants in the late 1800s, and some of its oldest homes reach back to this time. The neighborhood has a vintage feel through gridded streets, Cape Cod homes, bungalows, American Foursquares, and minimal traditionals built from the early 1900s to the 1950s. Many properties have modern upgrades and range in price from $150,000 to $300,000. A four-bedroom home with updates recently sold for $270,000 in this neighborhood and only spent 11 days on the market. Mature trees and cracks in the sidewalks also display the area's travel through time.

Playing a round of tennis at Cazenovia Park

Abbott McKinley's parks, including Cazenovia Park off the residential street Norman Avenue, are home to several baseball diamonds and tennis courts. There's even a golf course within the park. Locals also hang their hammocks at Heacock Park under the shade of sugar maple trees. "Having two parks within walking distance is unique to this area of Buffalo," Hourihan says. The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is also less than 2 miles away via South Park Avenue for a day out among the flowers.

Celebrating Irish heritage at the Buffalo Irish Center

The neighborhood celebrates its Irish heritage at the Buffalo Irish Center's weekly fish fry and the annual Irish Festival at Cazenovia Park from July 26th to 28th. The festival features live music, dancing and family-friendly sing-alongs. Local non-profit South Buffalo Roots hosts it, along with South Buffalo Porchfest — a one-day event each June where local musicians use neighborhood porches and front lawns as their venues. "Both festivals are still free and open to the public. Everyone enjoys walking through the neighborhood, listening to these bands that volunteer their time," Hourihan says.
