Little town-living in the countryside
“At the base of the rolling clay hills of Calhoun County, just where the Low Country of South Carolina begins, is the town of Cameron. Through the years, Cameron has gained a reputation of, ‘being that pretty, little town halfway between Charleston and Columbia, on Highway 176,’” wrote Calhoun County historian Jeanne Wilde Ulmer in 1958. To this day, her description of the town remains apt. The tiny town of Cameron is home to less than 500 people, and the surrounding area includes other small communities like Creston and Lonestar tucked between miles of farmland and cotton fields. The town is just 10 miles away from the county seat of Saint Matthews and the college town of Orangeburg, and Lake Marion and Congaree National Park are a short distance from the community. Anyone looking to make Cameron their home will be able to find a mix of large farm homes and more modest single-family dwellings in the community’s residential areas. From historic homes to natural wonders to community staples like local cafés, Cameron has plenty to offer in a small package.
Unique farmhouses and lakefront ranches
Within Cameron's town limits, the area has many historic farmhouses that range from brick Colonial Revival to detailed Queen Annes with decorative balconies and railings. These homes offer plenty of space and privacy and are often built on large plots of land that are tucked into heavy woods. Closer to the lake, ranch-style builds with modest-sized yards and waterfront access become more common. Single-family homes typically sell for around or under $200,000, while historic farmhouses with elaborate detail and several acres of land can range from $500,000 to $700,000.

State and national parks along Lake Marion
Lake Marion, one of South Carolina’s largest lakes, hugs the easternmost side of the Cameron region. The 315 miles of shoreline is dotted with campgrounds and marinas, like Stumphole Landing, which has an on-site bait and tackle shop, restaurant and laundry facility for both short- and long-term camping needs. Tucked against the lake is Santee State Park, which has over 10 miles of hiking trails and waters abundant with South Carolina catfish. Only a few miles from the northernmost post of the lake is Congaree National Park, where visitors can camp, fish, hike or go canoeing and kayaking.

Bleu Market Café opened its doors on Cameron Road in 2021, making it one of the newest food options and community gathering places in the area. “I’ve always felt at home here and in the surrounding area. We have a strong connection to the community, and we’re in a historic building downtown, so it’s a diamond in the rough,” says Novia Gardner, the owner of Bleu Market. The menu serves burgers, hot dogs, chicken wings , and classic southern appetizers like fried green tomatoes, fried okra, and grits. In neighboring Elloree, Logan’s Pizza House on East Cleveland Street dishes out cheese-covered pies, enormous crescent-shaped calzones and an array of freshly made cakes.
Locals can pick up everyday needs at Dollar General or General Food Store, which are both located on Old Number Six Highway in Elloree. For larger grocery trips, there is a Piggly Wiggly market on Harry C. Raysor Drive in St. Matthews.
