An artistic oasis in the desert

Since its development in the 1930s, Cathedral City Cove, or "The Cove," has been a quiet respite for artists who've come to find their muse in the vibrant sunsets over the San Jacinto Mountains and Indian Canyons, and the Colorado Desert's flora and fauna. Today, the community's artistic spirit is still on display at the galleries in the Perez Art District and in the handmade sculptures in some residents' front yards. Homebuyers continue to be drawn to the area's creative scene and gorgeous desert scenery, as well as lower home prices than nearby Palm Springs: The Cove's average home price is about $800,000, compared to $990,000 in Palm Springs.

Midcentury ranch-style homes from all decades

The Cove's ranch-style homes have the Coachella Valley's typically neutral color palettes and flat roofs. With the mountains as a backdrop, front yards are accented by towering palms and low-water desert plantings. “Some homes here date back to the 1930s, but most of the homes were built in the ‘50s and ‘60s,” says Carl Borey, a Palm Springs local who’s been working in real estate for over 12 years. “Other areas went up in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and there are some sections that are brand new.” Homes here tend to have three to four bedrooms, and their prices depend on size, age and extra features like backyard pools. Older, smaller homes range from $550,000 to $750,000, while newer, larger homes range from $800,000 to $1 million.

A vibrant arts and entertainment district downtown

The district hosts the city's 4th Friday Art Walk from September through May, displaying works by more than 45 artists.

The amphitheater hosts annual events like the Taste of Jalisco Festival in February, with its carnival rides, food vendors and live music, and Cathedral City LGBT Days in March, with its colorful Parade of Beds and performances by the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus.
