Governor's Square
Suburban Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County 28226
Renovating homes from the 1950s through the 1970s
"Lots tend to be smaller and less expensive than nearby communities like Myers Park and Foxcroft," Palmer says. "Governor's Square allows residents to stay close to Uptown Charlotte without having to buy a mega-mansion." Homes are often a Traditional style of architecture with Colonial Revival influence or ranch-styles built between the late 1950s and early 1970s. At around 2,185 to 3,640 square feet, houses range from $720,000 to $1,275,000. Townhouses with three to four bedrooms are priced between $400,000 and $687,000, while condos start at $285,000 and go as high as $688,000 for a 2023 build. “We’ve had a number of people who, instead of moving, decided to renovate and add on,” Henley says. “Those folks, as they have sold, have been able to recoup their investment.”Highly rated public and private schools
Sharon Elementary School receives an A-minus Niche rating. “When I was moving to Charlotte, I was looking for elementary schools,” Henley says. “Once I found the schools I wanted, then I found the neighborhood. We ended up at Sharon Elementary and never looked back.” Alexander Graham Middle receives a B-plus, while South Mecklenburg scores an A-minus. Locally known as South Meck, the high school offers The World Language Academy, where students can learn Spanish, Chinese and American Sign Language, among other languages. Charlotte Country Day School is an A-plus-rated kindergarten through Grade 12 school located in the neighborhood.Shopping and dining within immediate reach
Foxcroft East Shopping Center is within walking distance of many homes in the community. It’s home to Foxcroft Wine and Caribou Coffee. “When we used to have snow days, we’d all go down to the coffee shop,” Henley says. “Because they knew we were coming, they’d make sure to open up.” Brixx Wood Fired Pizza + Craft Bar is a casual spot to grab a slice, pasta or wings. SouthPark Mall is just down the street with luxury stores like Saint Laurent, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Nordstrom. The closest grocery stores are Whole Foods and Harris Teeter, both less than a 2-mile drive.A secret tunnel to the neighborhood pool
About a mile south of the community, Carmel Road Park is a small green space with a playground, sports courts and fields. McAlpine Creek Park has 114 acres with a fishing pier, dog park and paved trail access. With a membership, kids can attend summer camps at the Harris YMCA or join the swim program at Foxcroft East Racquet and Swim Club. “We are across the street from the neighborhood pool and tennis courts,” Henley says. “There is a tunnel under the busy street that you can walk or ride your bike through.” Multiple private country clubs are within a 3-mile radius of Governor's Square. For example, Cedarwood Country Club charges $40,000 membership fees and offers an 18-hole golf course and club dining.Home & garden and beer garden clubs
Governor's Square has an active voluntary homeowner’s association. “They do their best to take care of our neighborhood,” Henley says. “Recently, they put new signage around our neighborhood. It looks great; I call it the jewelry of the neighborhood.” They help keep the community close with events like a new neighbor picnic and Fourth of July celebration. There are even a few groups that meet more regularly. “We have a very active home and garden club for the ladies,” Henley says. “They pick out the Yard of the Month. The men, not to be outdone, have a beer garden club.”Getting in and out of the neighborhood
"We are on a busy thoroughfare, Fairview Road — which can take you anywhere in town,” Henley says. “But we also have a back entrance on a quieter street, so it’s very easy to get in and out of this neighborhood.” Residents can use bus stops along Carmel and Fairview Roads. Most streets are lined with sidewalks, providing a safe route to nearby shopping and dining. Corporations like Bank of America, Duke Energy and Honeywell are headquartered in Charlotte’s City Center. The commute is about a 7-mile drive. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is 14 miles northwest of Governor's Square.Crime
The neighborhood’s CAP Index crime score is 3 out of 10, slightly lower than the national average of 4.
