Friends of Mountain Creek
At the base of Chattanooga’s Signal Mountain is the neighborhood of Mountain Creek, a quiet community with a small-town vibe. Its residents refer to themselves as “Friends of Mountain Creek," showcasing their connection to each other and their community. “It's not super big up here — not very many people. But it’s a very tight-knit community,” says Brianna Dean, the bar manager of local restaurant Civil Provisions and Bar. Stunning mountain vistas and wide-open spaces mean residents have all the outdoor options immediately available while about 5 miles from Chattanooga.
Ranch-style homes and Colonial Revivals line the winding suburban streets
Mountain Creek ranges between neat subdivisions and winding backroads, with everything from condominium communities to single-family homes. Ranch-style homes and bi-levels sit next to large, mixed-characteristic Colonial Revivals. Architectural designs also include custom properties, such as contemporary lodges and stucco-covered homes. Most residents enjoy large front yards, and some properties sit on at least a couple of acres. Condos range in price from around $175,000 to about $200,000. Homes with three bedrooms or fewer tend to sell for $280,000 to $480,000, whereas homes with four bedrooms or more range from $400,000 to $700,000.
Waterfalls and mountain hikes
One of Mountain Creek's biggest draws is its proximity to Signal Mountain. Signal Mountain Road, the thoroughfare leading to the mountainside, begins right in the neighborhood. From here, there are miles of trails to explore, but some of the most well-known and beloved areas include Rainbow Lake, Edward's Point and Signal Point. No matter the path, all lead to hikes rich with lush greenery, the rush of waterfalls and high elevation, allowing a full view of the valley below. For something more casual, Mountain Creek Park is a local neighborhood spot with a large playground, paved walking trails and scenic mountain views. The Red Bank Bounce, an indoor inflatable playground, is a good spot for a rainy day. The Chattanooga Theatre Centre, located on the riverfront 4 miles south, produces Broadway-style musicals, plays and children's shows. Founded in 1923, the center is one of the oldest community theaters in the United States.
Close to big-box stores and peppered with unique restaurants
On the neighborhood's south end, there’s a shopping district full of typical-errand stops. There are big-box stores such as Walmart Supercenter, popular grocery stores such as Food City and service businesses such as banks and gas stations. Locals can head to River Drifters' porch and dine by the riverside. This locally owned restaurant serves premium burgers and po'boys. For a more upscale experience, Civil Provisions and Bar serves Mediterranean and New American food. “We get a lot of regulars and they always know someone else in here,” says Dean. “We constantly have tables merging together and people chatting and catching up.” The restaurant also has a large back patio where visitors can dine in view of the Signal Mountain, which rises 1,700 feet above sea level.
The Hamilton County District
The Hamilton County District serves Mountain Creek. Students can start their education at Red Bank Elementary, which earned a B-minus on Niche. They can continue their education at Red Bank Middle School, which scored a C-plus, and at Red Bank High School, which received a B-minus. Red Bank High has an affiliated engineering and computer science institute, BlueCross Technology Academy, which provides pathways for students to get a head start on college. There are also several private schools from which to choose, including The Baylor School, which is regarded as one of Tennessee's best private middle-high schools. It is acclaimed by several educational resources for its academics, extensive extracurricular list and college prep.
Getting around Mountain Creek
U.S. Route 27 borders Mountain Creek to the east, directly connecting to downtown Chattanooga over the Tennessee River via the Williams Memorial Bridge. Though public transportation is not offered directly in the neighborhood, the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority serves several bus stops along North Market Street and Cherokee Boulevard, 2.5 miles south of Mountain Creek, near the riverfront. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is about 14 miles southeast, providing connections to major destinations such as Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth and Chicago.
