North Gate-Big Ridge
Wooded properties in suburban subdivisions
Winding roads cut through forests 10 miles north of Chattanooga, leading to a residential landscape that blends suburban and rural. Many of the subdivisions that make up North Gate have a distinct vibe, from the fenceless and wooded lots of Colonial Shores and the manicured lawns of Amber Brook to the lakeside homes to the southeast of the neighborhood. Architectural styles include updated Cape Cods, Tudor-style cottages, New Traditional-style homes in planned subdivisions, spacious ranch-style homes with ample outdoor living space and waterfront Colonial Revival estates with private boat docks. Prices typically range from $350,000 to $600,000, though some homes directly on the lake sell for $750,000 to $1 million.Exploring the waters of Chickamauga Lake
The Chickamauga Dam, a hydroelectric dam built across the Tennessee River in 1940, defines much of the outdoor recreation throughout North Gate-Big Ridge. Once completed, the dam created Chickamauga Lake, which forms the area's eastern border. Residents can bike the trails at Tennessee Riverpark, paddle the still waters on kayaks, fish for bass along the shore or explore the lake by boat from the docks of the Big Ridge Yacht Club. Farther inland, the Greenway Farms Dog Park is a 180-acre park along with 6 miles of trails, boat ramps, indoor facilities and a popular dog park. One of the Greenway trails leads to a historic log cabin and community gardens. To the west of the neighborhood is the Big Ridge AMC Theater in the Northgate Mall.Hamilton County's award-winning schools
The Hamilton County School District serves the students of North Gate. They can start their education at Big Ridge Elementary, which scored a B-plus on Niche. They can continue at Hixson Middle School and Hixson High School, both of which received a B on the site. Hixson High has a Future Ready Institute with pathways in healthcare, agriculture and business, offering licensing and certification opportunities in each field. Chattanooga State Community College is 5 miles south, across the Tennessee River, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is about 10 miles south.Shopping at Northgate Mall and dining on Chickamauga Lake
The Northgate Mall is a bustling shopping and entertainment destination on the neighborhood’s western edge. It features dozens of retailers, restaurants and seasonal events. The mall is surrounded by big-box stores such as Harbor Freight, Home Depot and Hobby Lobby, as well as medical facilities and fitness centers. For groceries, there’s a Publix Super Market and Food City. “You’d be surprised by how many good restaurants there are in that area,” Ramos says. “It’s not very common for a suburb to have so much food choice.”Lakeshore Grille is a French-inspired steak and seafood restaurant on the banks of Chickamauga Lake. Getting its start as a grocery store for diabetic, low-carb and gluten-free products 14 years ago, Mimis Deli is now a busy sandwich shop offering deli wraps, hamburgers and salads while still providing some of its trademark specialty foods.
“Mimi was my grandmother. We actually opened it in her honor,” says second-generation owner Julie Crawsord. “When she became diabetic, we wanted to create and find cheap local products for the community as well.” This family-owned and operated sandwich shop has a casual, frequented-by-locals kind of vibe. “We have a ton of regulars, and a few people who come in every single day.”
