Ridgedale-Oak Grove
Early 20th century Craftsmen and bungalows to new contemporaries
From century-old Craftsman bungalows on tight lots and stately historic homes on Missionary Ridge, Ridgedale has a lot of variation. “You've got a little bit of everything,” says Collin Rogers, real estate agent with Greater Chattanooga, Keller Williams Realty. “You've got lower income properties in Oak Grove, you've got the Mill Town redevelopment with new construction, then you’ve got historic homes on Missionary Ridge where, literally, there are cannons in the front yards,” says Rogers, referring to Civil War artifacts. Throughout most of Ridgedale, homes are close together and often separated by chain-link fences. Prices range from $200,000 to $450,000. Some Missionary Ridge homes range from $900,000 to $1,000,000. Industrial buildings too, on Vance Avenue, connect to the neighborhood's workday past. From cafes to themed neighborhood bars
With East Main Street dividing Ridgedale and Oak Grove, residents in both are close to shops and restaurants. “The restaurant scene is going to be kind of 'meat-and-three' sort of thing— lots of soul food,” says Rogers, referring to a classic Southern-style meal usually served in casual restaurants. Sleepyhead Coffee at Dodds Avenue and Main opens as a café in the morning and morphs into a alcohol-free cocktail lounge in the evening. Sugar’s Ribs is another Ridgedale staple, serving classic Southern barbeque and retro vibes, with checkered tablecloths and a jukebox in the corner. What visitors might not expect are its mascots: seven goats, which graze in the field next to the restaurant and can be called with the ring of a bell, which hangs above a sign labeled “Goat Bell”. Mean Jeen’s is a new neighborhood bar with a funky vibe inspired by the film The Big Lebowski. The restaurant is named after owner Jeena Listar, who runs the bar with her husband, Josh Mongoven. “It’s been an endearing name for her,” says Mongoven. “She actually has it tattooed on her knuckles.” While there are a few community grocery stores such as La Guatemalteca, there is a Food City and Walmart Neighborhood Market east of the neighborhood on Ringgold Road.See the Sculpture Fields at Montague Park
Montague Park is home to Sculpture Fields, a 45-acre lawn woven with gravel walkways and peppered with contemporary art. Known as the largest urban park in Chattanooga, much of the art displayed here was created by sculptor John Henry, who redeveloped the space in 2016. “He has large-scale sculptures all over the world,” says Rogers. Montague Park also features pieces created by other artists from across the country. Trails wind through the art installations, and people often picnic beneath the structures. To the south of Ridgedale is East Lake Duck Pond. Visitors enter through a red brick archway, which leads to a paved path encircling the duck pond and lined with vintage streetlamps. This serene scene is interrupted only by the splashing of the water fountains and the occasional chorus of quacks. The park is also home to several pavilions and a small playground. Established in 1927, the Chattanooga Zoo is a 13-acre expanse in Warner Park, just north of the neighborhood. The Hamilton County School District
The Hamilton County School District serves Ridgedale residents, with students zoned into several different school pipelines based on their address. Kids can start their education at East Side Elementary School, which scored a C-plus on Niche. They can continue to Orchard Knob Middle School, graded C. and The Howard School, a grade 9-12 school that offers several specialized learning programs, such as the Erlanger Institute of Healthcare and Innovation. The McCallie School, located on the eastern end of Ridgedale, is an all-boys boarding school that received an A-plus grade from Niche. McCallie, which serves students in sixth to 12th grade, is ranked in the state as the top high school for both athletes and STEM.A few blocks down from the annual MAINx24
East Main Street provides a direct connection to the Southside Historic District less than 2 miles west. That puts residents close to the annual MAINx24, a 24-hour festival that occurs each December in the Southside area. The event features a variety of activities but essentially starts and ends with breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Typical scenes over the years have seen goers, decked out in outfits like onesie walrus and reindeer costumes, go on trots on the road, with some even pushing strollers along the way. “It’s really nice to be that close, especially when there are city events going on, and especially family-friendly events,” says Sacco. Some other neighborhood events include a Community Friendsgiving and Tree Planting Day in Ridgedale.Getting around Ridgedale
Those commuting downtown can take Interstate 24. East Main Street provides another route downtown. Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) services several bus stops along 24th Street, East Main Street and Dodds Avenue. Cyclists can take the bike lanes along Dodds Avenue and South Hickory Street. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is about 7 miles east of Ridgedale. Parkridge Medical Center and CHI Memorial Hospital are just north of the neighborhood.Crime
