Getting bites at Brown Sugar Bakery and Oooh Wee It Is
Multiple different locally owned restaurants sit around Chatham. Mitchell Smith, the branch manager for the Chicago Public Library Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch, says, “We have a lot of restaurants here; it just depends on what you’re looking for. There’s Josephine’s Southern Cooking, Oooh Wee! It Is and Uncle John’s BBQ.” Smith also recommends Brown Sugar Bakery, a popular spot for sweet treats. Studio Movie Grill, a spot frequented by Chatham residents, provides in-theater drinking and dining selections while showing the newest Hollywood flicks. Food4Less and Aldi sit across Interstate 95 when locals need to pick up groceries, and they also visit Family Dollar just south of Cole Park. More retail options are scattered along South Cottage Grove Avenue. Le Club Boutique provides fashionable women’s clothing, and other locally owned shops sit around the area, such as America’s Kids, Obsessed Chicago Boutique and Effortless Style Studio Boutique.Bungalows make up the neighborhood
Most locals rent their homes, but single-family homes are often on the market. Simple bungalows fill the Chatham neighborhood. Fixer-upper homes ready for renovations can sell for $75,000 to $150,000. Move-in ready options land in the $200,000 to $400,000 range, including homes with detached garages, limited yard space and concrete front steps. Paved sidewalks run through the area, giving residents a path to use when walking their dogs or going for a jog. The CAP Index gives the neighborhood a 5 out of 10 crime score, with 10 being the highest. The national average is 4, and the area has an above-average score for violent crime. Homes between East 87th Street and East 89th Street often sit in the Garden Homes Historic District. These homes were built in the early 1990s and often look like two homes attached in the middle.Taking the train or CTA bus
Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) buses can take commuters to stops like Food4Less or the Chicago State University Campus, which sits less than 2 miles south of the neighborhood. The buses also stop by the 91st Street and 87th Street train stations for those who go 13 miles into downtown Chicago for work or to explore the museums there. Interstate 94 is another close-by option for traveling to the Windy City.Community get-togethers around town
The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Branch Library puts on movie nights, meet-the-author events and family game nights. “Our events get people together, and we have events for adults and kids to participate in,” Smith says. The area has over 15 places of worship, including the Masjid Al Farooq, Chatham-Avalon Church of Christ and New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.Dixon Elementary supports students and local vendors
Arthur Dixon Elementary School serves Chatham students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. Niche gives the school a C-plus. “Dixion Elementary is one of the top schools in our area,” Smith says. The school brings in vendors for their African American Bazaar, also known as Cultural Connections, so the students can see their neighbors fulfilling their dreams and running successful businesses. Some may also attend the C-rated Jane A. Neil School or C-minus-rated Burnside Academy before later graduating from Emil G. Hirsch Metropolitan High School, which earns a C-plus.Playing at Tuley Park or Brown Memorial Park
Tuley Park, the largest park in the neighborhood, features 10 tennis courts, an indoor gymnasium and a playground with an interactive splash pad for cooling off in the summer. The park also hosts outdoor after-school programs and adult fitness classes. Locals of all ages can have fun at Nat King Cole Park, also known as Cole Park, or Brown Memorial Park. Both have playground equipment, baseball diamonds and basketball courts.
