Wicker Park is a shopping and dining destination on the North Side

Once known as Chicago's hipster haven, Wicker Park has mellowed out a bit since more families and working professionals entered the mix. These days, they're drawn to the neighborhood's housing, dining and easy commutes to corporate gigs in The Loop. But Wicker Park hasn’t completely let go of its past: Music venues and comedy clubs still attract a younger audience, and colorful murals give the neighborhood some artistic energy, even though the artists themselves were priced out years ago. Boutiques, bookstores and record shops bring lots of outsiders to the neighborhood, increasing foot traffic on streets like Milwaukee Avenue, the main strip that leads to popular neighborhoods like Logan Square and Avondale.

Wicker Park's selection of restaurants, cafes and shops

Shopping and dining is scattered throughout the neighborhood. “There’s not just one area where the bars and shops and congregated,” says Lance Kirshner, a broker with Compass. “Wicker Park has a couple of main thoroughfares, like Division, North Avenue and Milwaukee. And because there are a couple, there are more options for restaurants, bars and boutiques.” Popular spots include:

  • Club Lucky, an Italian restaurant with a cocktail lounge with a classic diner look and known for its giant martinis
  • Big Star, a casual Mexican joint specializing in street food and tacos that has a walk-up order window
  • Mindy's Bakery, a coffee shop and bakery with plenty of bagels, pastries and cookies
  • Small Cheval, known for its burgers and shakes, including a rotating shake of the month
  • The Handlebar, which specializes in vegan and vegetarian options and is known for its tree-shaded patio
You can also explore local shops, boutiques and vintage stores. Myopic Books sells 70,000 new and used books across three floors, and Reckless Records is a vinyl lover's dream.
