Golf and nature lovers thrive in Wildewood
Just outside of downtown Columbia is Wildewood — a pond-filled neighborhood known for its golf courses, large homes with sprawling yards and its proximity to Sesquicentennial State Park while offering loads of shopping and dining options. Inspired by a subdivision of the same name in Memphis, Tennessee, Wildewood began taking shape in the late 1960s. Early in its development, the neighborhood's polo fields drew spectators from all over South Carolina and beyond. Their influence is still seen today in neighborhood signage and street names.
Wildewood homes often feature brick facades and sprawling lots
Many homes in Wildewood have brick and stone facades with Cape Cod, colonial and New Traditional frameworks, though Neoclassical ranch styles are also common. Many homes price between $250,000 and $500,000, though properties overlooking the golf course or one of the neighborhood's several ponds can top out around $1 million. Wildewood's housing market is relatively competitive with many homes selling within three to five weeks. "The majority of the lots are a half-acre or more. Many have mature landscaping and trees," says Anna Paige Durant, certified luxury home specialist for Coldwell Banker Realty who has nearly 20 years of experience in real estate. Durant notes there are also nearby townhouses that may reach up to 1,800 square feet and price around $200,000.

Sesquicentennial State Park is the cornerstone of Wildewood
Wildewood locals enjoy outdoor recreation right in their backyard. Sesquicentennial State Park sits on the neighborhood's west side and serves as a top destination for hikers and cyclists. Pet parents flock to the dog park while children enjoy the playground. During the summer, locals kayak on Sesquicentennial Lake or soak up the sun along its shore. The Polo Road Soccer Complex is a top choice for pickup games while golfers book weekend tee times at The Woodlands Golf & Country Club or The WildeWood Club. Durant says the golf clubs are just the start. "So many clubs are available for people living in the neighborhood to join," she says. "There's a book club, garden club, bridge club, too many to name."
