A neighborhood on the West Side with accessible price points
Cherry Creek, a neighborhood on the West Side of Columbus, was partially developed to accommodate the growing number of General Motors workers. While the plant is no longer there, this neighborhood still stands today and is known as a calm, mainly apartment-filled residential community that boasts a convenient location and accessible pricing for the Columbus market. Prospective residents will find that single-family properties here tend to fall in the $200,000 range, but condos can go for even less than $100,000. While these prices may be the main thing that attracts people to this community, it is also conveniently just west of many establishments and is near a couple of green spaces, making it so that residents are just a short drive away from popular eateries and large wooded areas. Another appeal of the neighborhood is that the South-Western City School District features options with robust English language learner offerings, serving the needs of this diverse community. With easy access to Interstate 270, residents here are well-connected to surrounding, more bustling areas.

Housing in Cherry Creek: Apartments, condos and single-family homes
Housing development in Cherry Creek began primarily in the ‘60s and largely continued until the mid-90s. These mainly non-HOA homes with garages, often split-levels or ranch-style dwellings, sit along curving sidewalk-lined streets that often spread into cul-de-sacs. Scattered around the community are also some bi-levels and condos, but most of the housing here consists of apartments, whose inhabitants make up part of the nearly 60% of people who rent their properties in the neighborhood. Those who want to buy a property here will find that prices typically range from around $80,000 for a one-bedroom condo to about $325,000 for a larger split-level. “It’s the relative affordability” that can attract residents, says August Brunsman, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway who has experience in the area. “You can get a lot of house for not so much money.” He adds that this neighborhood’s properties are often cheaper than in surrounding areas.

Important to know: Commutes, employers and more
While locals can take advantage of COTA's public bus systems, most people here drive to get around. Cherry Creek is bounded by I-270, and residents will also have easy access to Interstate 670, which can get them to the John Glenn Columbus International Airport, which is 16 miles away and downtown Columbus, which is around 11 miles away. While the privately owned Southwest Airport is just south of the neighborhood, Cherry Creek is not known as a loud neighborhood; it only receives a loud Soundscore rating for the area around I-270. Nearby employers include OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, which is about 2 miles away via Norton Road and The Ohio State University, which is approximately 11 miles away via Interstate 70. Some residents here may work at one of the community's many apartment complexes, while others have their own businesses as plumbers or roofers. Other important things to know about the community are that it is home to two churches and that it is near what was once Westside Mall. "The state of Ohio just approved grant money to revitalize the site. If I had to guess it'll be multiuse stuff. The revitalization will take part in the mid-Ohio regional growth that we're in the middle of," says Brunsman.
