Edgewood
Suburban Neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio
Franklin County 43207
Bungalows, Cape Cods and ranch styles
Older homes dating to the 1920s are north of Frebis Avenue, but Edgewood is primarily made up of bungalows, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes from the 1950s. Many houses have a full basement and a detached garage and are about 15 to 30 feet off the road. The neighborhood's streets do not have sidewalks. Edgewood's single-family homes fall below Columbus’ median housing price. The majority of the homes are priced from $100,000 to $270,000. Some of the older homes that have been remodeled are priced over $300,000. Affordability is a major draw for many homebuyers. “People can get 15-year tax abatements in this area, so taxes get locked in at the prerenovation price. That helps affordability a lot,” says Realtor Angela Keener, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Keller Williams Consultants. Keener adds that homebuyers still have access to trendy nearby neighborhoods like Grandview and German Village, except prices in Edgewood are lower. The Southwind Villa Mobile Home Park is in the center of the neighborhood.Lincoln Park Elementary and South High School
Lincoln Park Elementary is about half a mile west of the neighborhood. It serves students from prekindergarten through sixth grade. South High School is about 2 miles northwest of the neighborhood. It serves students from grades 7 through 12. Students can get free tickets for the Columbus Symphony or a Ballet Met performance. Both schools have C-minus Niche ratings.Casual neighborhood dining options and access to German Village
Multiple dining options along Lockbourne Road are within walking distance for most residents. The Dawghouse Pizza & Bar is a neighborhood dive serving hot dogs and burgers. Its karaoke nights are a big hit with locals. Pachucos Taqueria is a food truck that serves authentic Mexican cuisine with cold bottles of Jarritos. People sit around picnic tables and enjoy their dishes. In Golden Donuts Diner, a lunch counter overlooks the grill and the walls are decorated with record sleeves. Also along Lockbourne Road, El Girasol is a Latino grocery store painted with the red, white and green stripes of the Mexican flag. There’s also a Save A Lot grocery store on the neighborhood’s southeast end. Three miles northwest, German Village is filled with authentic German dining options. “A lot of Edgewood residents eat there,” Keener says. The family-owned Schmidt’s Sausage Haus has been one of Columbus’ most popular sauerkraut and schnitzel restaurants for over 140 years.
Karns Park and Lincoln Swimming Pool
Edgewood offers ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Two blocks north of Edgewood, Karns Park has a basketball court, a picnic shelter and a playground. Deshler Park has two baseball fields a mile northeast of the neighborhood. Smith Road Park is about two blocks east of the neighborhood. A paved walking path encompasses the park’s open field. For a refreshing dip on a hot day, people travel a mile west to Lincoln Swimming Pool, which opened to the community in 2015. There’s a double water slide, diving boards, a toddler area and competitive lanes for swimming laps.Getting around Columbus
Public bus stops line Frebis Avenue, on the neighborhood’s north end, and Lockbourne Road, on the neighborhood’s east end. Downtown Columbus is less than 5 miles north of Edgewood via Lockbourne Road and U.S. Route 33. Rickenbacker International Airport is about 9 miles south of Edgewood via Groveport Road and Alum Creek Drive.
A strong civic association
The Edgewood Civic Organization has been around for about 20 years. Welch says he’s trying to bring back some of the events the organization put on before the pandemic started. “We used to have a community garden tour, and we’d shut down a neighborhood block for a street festival with food and games,” he says. There’s also been an effort to encourage people to decorate for holidays. “We started the effort when we moved here, and nobody was decorating, so we put Christmas lights up and flags for the 4th of July,” he says. “Now, when you drive in the neighborhood at the right time of year, you’ll know there’s a holiday coming up.” With his passion for Edgewood, it was a simple decision for Welch to join the civic organization. “It’s a wonderful neighborhood, and I’m proud to be here,” Welch says. “Most of the residents have the same pride that I do, and I hope that’s instilled into our new residents as they move in."
LSS Food Pantry and Smyrna Baptist Church
LSS Champion Food Pantry is on the neighborhood's northwest corner. In the center of the neighborhood, Smyrna Baptist Church organizes regular community events like backyard barbecues and fundraisers.
