Locale with deep-rooted history seeing revitalization

Steeped in history with hotels and homes once frequented by 20th-century jazz greats, Mount Vernon is near the heart of Columbus’ historic Near East Side community, which has seen significant revitalization in recent years. “We’re seeing a rebound of new businesses, housing and investment,” says Al Edmondson, President of the Mount Vernon District Improvement Association. “The new buildings that are going up are a complement to our neighborhood.” Mount Vernon’s convenient location butted against Interstates 670 and 71 also makes it appealing to commuters. “You can take Long Street and Broad Street into downtown in less than 10 minutes,” says Thomas Hamrick, a lifelong Columbus resident and Realtor with Keller Williams Consultants. “It’s a pretty pedestrian-friendly area so you can walk into parts of downtown like the Discovery District, as well.”

Niche local restaurants and small arts scene

Mount Vernon is located just north of another historic neighborhood, King-Lincoln Bronzeville and the two share many amenities. The King Arts Complex and Lincoln Theatre are local entertainment hotspots built in the early 20th century. “10 years ago, you just had the Lincoln Theatre in that area, no restaurants or shops, just surface parking lots,” says Hamrick. “The city has really densified that area with apartment buildings, quaint restaurants like a gluten-free biscuit bakery and a couple of small bars.” Other nearby restaurants include The Creole Kitchen, where locals can get a taste of New Orleans through dishes like crawfish etouffee or catfish with grits and eggs. The tiny hole-in-the-wall is mostly takeout, but the tables there fill up quickly on nights when live jazz music is performed. The closest grocery store is a Kroger, roughly 3 miles away along East 2nd Avenue. Mount Vernon is also within 3 miles of the bustling Short North arts district, with a thriving nightlife scene and copious local restaurants.

Besides biscuits, Daddy-O's Gluten Free Biscuits offers breakfast sandwiches and cinnamon biscuits.

Renovated parks and plans for more

The neighborhood green space, Saunders Park, spans 15 acres and gives residents a quick fix for outdoor recreation. Established in 1921, the park was initially called Maryland Park before being renamed in 1989 to honor a longtime radio personality. Eight years after it opened, The Columbus Dispatch newspaper donated money to build the city’s first public swimming pool. In recent years, the Maryland Swimming Pool underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation and now includes a six-lane lap pool, two towering slides and a water spray area. The park also encompasses athletic fields, basketball courts and a playground. Plans are to build a protected, two-lane bike path on Mt. Vernon Avenue so cyclists can safely travel the area. The new bike lanes will offer a smooth connection with the nearby Alum Creek Greenway Trail, a 22-mile bike and pedestrian pathway traversing the city's northeast side.

Easy access to I-71 and I-670

“With the interstates and two hospitals nearby, the area definitely has more of an urban feel than other neighborhoods in Columbus,” says Hamrick. Two branches of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center sit off Leonard and Taylor avenues, both within walking distance for residents. Although the neighborhood is bordered by Interstates 71 and 670, locals can avoid the major highways to reach downtown Columbus, roughly 2 miles away via East Long Street. The Ohio State University’s campus is within 3.5 miles of Mount Vernon and accessible by taking East 5th Avenue. Multiple Central Ohio Transit Authority, or COTA, stops are dotted along North Champion and Mount Vernon avenues for anyone needing to use public transportation.

Local landmarks once hosted music legends

A historic African American district, Mount Vernon is home to several notable city landmarks. Macon Hotel, a red-brick, two-story commercial structure built in 1888, hosted touring jazz entertainers like Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald during its heyday. In 2021, plans were announced to renovate the building into a hotel with a ground-floor restaurant and bar. The Leonard Pearl Henderson House, a home built in the mid-19th to early 20th century, gets its name from its former owner, a prominent local attorney. Henderson turned his home into a social hub for Black entertainers and celebrities, hosting jazz musicians like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong and basketball great Wilt Chamberlain.
