How this small urban neighborhood has been quietly changing
Just west of Alum Creek and Interstate 670, St. Mary’s is a small urban neighborhood that’s been quietly changing. There’s been some renovation over the past few years, with older homes slowly getting fixed up and refreshed. Thanks to its proximity to downtown and several major job centers, the area has started to attract professionals who want an easier commute and home prices that are still more affordable than what you’ll find in the suburbs.
Saint Mary's is located just east of downtown Columbus, making it part of the city's urban core.
Saint Mary's walkability and access to public transportation are major selling points.

Older homes on compact lots see more updates from new buyers
The neighborhood’s streets are lined with tightly packed homes, often just a few feet apart. Lots tend to be small, about a tenth of an acre on average, with long, narrow backyards. Most of the houses were built between the 1920s and 1950s, and many need at least some updates. That work has been happening more often lately, as new residents move in and start putting their own spin on the area’s Cape Cods, bungalows, and American Foursquares. “It feels like this neighborhood is close to its next chapter,” says Jackie Stinchfield, a broker and Realtor at Keller Williams Consultants Realty. “A lot of young professionals who grew up in the suburbs are looking for something more urban, and places like this are on their radar.” The median price for single-family homes is in the high $100,000s, in line with nearby neighborhoods like Oriole Heights, Shepard and Devon Triangle, but still noticeably lower than prices across the creek in Bexley.
The neighborhood is in the heart of Columbus.
With these older houses, there are opportunities for both first-time buyers and experienced homeowners.

Columbus City Schools offers zoning, choice and open enrollment
Students attend Columbus City Schools, the largest district in Ohio. Columbus Performance Academy is nearby, and for some kids it’s close enough to walk. Families can apply to magnet and alternative schools across the district through a lottery, use open enrollment to attend other Columbus schools or look at out-of-district options under Ohio’s open-enrollment law. There are also private and charter schools in and around the neighborhood, including Columbus Noor Mastery Academy and Montessori Earth School. Ohio Dominican University operates a satellite campus just outside the area, which matters to many would-be residents. “That’ll draw in some people looking to be close to the school while also looking for affordability,” says Corey LaVeris, Associate with Re/Max Affiliates. “That’s for both students and staff alike.”
East Columbus Elementary School covers grades K-5th grade.
East High School in Saint Mary's was originally constructed in 1922.

Easy access to I‑670 puts major job hubs within quick reach
St. Mary’s is adjacent to I-670, giving it a good location for commuters. Downtown Columbus is about 5 miles away, while the tech corridor in New Albany is about 15 miles away. Other job hubs like Clintonville and Upper Arlington are each less than 10 miles away. The Central Ohio Transit Authority has a bus service that runs through the area with stops along Brentnell Avenue.
Local markets, casual food and low‑key shopping spots nearby
A Kroger is about 3 miles south near Franklin Park, but for quick grocery runs, plenty of locals stick closer to home at spots like Fifth & Sunbury Market. Nearby shopping is pretty low-key, with places like the Shoppes at Airpointe offering a handful of stores and takeout options. For bigger shopping trips, Easton Town Center is about 5 miles away and tends to be the go-to, with the largest mix of shops, restaurants, and services in the state. Restaurants tend to be small and casual, including Mexican food at Dos Hermanos and subs at Philly Boys Market & Deli. Ohio State Pizza & Wings serves up pies, gyros, sandwiches and desserts.
Public parks include bike trails and conservation areas
While there aren’t many public parks right in the neighborhood, several popular options are just a short drive away:
Brentnell Park has basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, plus activities at the Brentnell Community Center.
Alum Creek Trail runs nearly 25 miles and is a favorite for walking and biking, stretching from Westerville down to Groveport.
Franklin Park combines walking paths and playgrounds with the gardens and exhibits at its conservatory.
Nelson Park offers a dog-friendly setup with picnic shelters and access to the Greenway Trail.
