St. Mary's is working toward being "the next big community"
Bordering Alum Creek, one of Columbus’ most scenic river corridors, people who live in St. Mary’s love access to the waterway, the trail that follows it, and the convenience of downtown Columbus. “I just think that this neighborhood is on the verge of being the next big community,” says Jackie Stinchfield, a broker and Realtor at Keller Williams Consultants Realty. “I know many young people who grew up in the suburbs and are young professionals, and they want to move to a more urban area like this.”
Homes are early 20th-century styles that sometimes need renovations
Homes in St. Mary’s range from the 1920s to the ‘50s. Some need renovation, and some have been renovated to add to their charm. The homes vary in size from 900 to approaching 2,000 square feet. Cape Cod, Craftsman and Foursquare are some architectural styles you’ll see. Stinchfield recently sold a 1925 Foursquare in St. Mary’s. “The house was completely renovated, has three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, a full basement and a two-car detached garage,” she says—that home with almost 2,000 square feet sold for just over $300,000. Most homes are in the price range of $150,000 to $250,000. A good sample size of the houses in St. Mary’s can be seen while traveling down Wellington Boulevard, a divided road separated by a grassy median. Both sides feature charming homes that are approaching a century old.
Champion Middle School is a Health Science Academy
Students living in St. Mary’s attend school within the Columbus City School District. East Columbus Elementary School. Almost 400 prekindergarten through fifth-grade students go to this school. Champion Middle School is designated a Health Science Academy, meaning it focuses monthly on health information and practices. In a particular month, students concentrate on healthy eating. According to the Niche website, East High School has a student-to-teacher ratio of 14 to 1. The Shepard School, a charter school with a technology focus teaching kindergarten through sixth grade, is located within the neighborhood.
Public parks include bike trails and conservation areas
The Alum Creek Bike Trail closely follows the path of the waterway of the same name. The trail, popular among bikers, walkers and joggers, totals 25 miles and runs from the northern suburb of Westerville to Three Creeks Metro Park. A portion of the path goes through the southern section of the neighborhood and connects to Hayden Park, which has just over 10 acres of mainly green space; there’s trail access and, with a permit, you can use the archery range on site. Cassady Park is a two-and-a-half-acre conservation area on the other side of Interstate 670 and Alum Creek. The Columbus Metropolitan Library has its Shepard Branch located in the neighborhood. “One of the reasons that the clients who bought the Foursquare love the area is the proximity to the library,” Stinchfield says. It went through an extensive renovation that was completed in 2016. The facility has plenty of computer stations and a place for patrons to meet and study. There are self-checkout stations and a touchscreen where you can look up the availability of books.
The neighborhood is just between downtown and the airport
With proximity to Interstate 670, you’re between the airport and downtown. “With the library and the bike path also close by, I just feel like it’s another one of the pockets in the Columbus area that’s going to become very desirable,” Stinchfield says.
