Convenience and price points attract first-time buyers
Westgate is a neighborhood that may be ideal for someone just starting the home-buying process. “This is the neighborhood if you want to go for a nice, affordable classic 1920s home,” says Brian Bainbridge, a broker with CRT Realtors. “Many first-time homebuyers don’t want a cookie-cutter home and want to be closer to downtown.” Westgate affords newcomers the suburban feel without sacrificing convenience to urban amenities, which can be found along West Broad Street. The neighborhood is also within 5 miles of downtown Columbus' lively dining, shopping and entertainment scene.

Mix of 20th century homes with manicured grassy lawns
Driving down any street in Westgate will reveal the early 20th-century homes, especially in the neighborhood’s eastern end. “I showed a house there that had one of those old built-in telephone tables,” says Bainbridge. “You don’t see those anymore. You may even see a dumbwaiter.” Bainbridge adds the western part of Westgate has more Cape Cods. The rest of the community has a mix of bungalows, Tudor-style houses, American Foursquare, and Colonial Revival homes. Residents can sit outside on their front porches and patios and wave to neighbors as they pass by on the sidewalks scattered throughout the neighborhood. The houses sell for $190,000 to $310,000, though most price points fall in the $200,000s. Though small, yards in Westgate are shaded by mature trees and are well kept, with perfectly trimmed shrubs and pruned flower beds. Because the area is primarily car-dependent, slim paved driveways are beside the houses here.

Sports-themed playgrounds and serene walking trails
The neighborhood’s focal point is the 43-acre Westgate Park. Locals can cast a line into the stocked fishing pond or head inside the community center to exercise in the fitness center. Several trails wind through the park, including a 1.2-mile loop around the park’s perimeter. It’s become a favorite among kids in the neighborhood because there are three playgrounds, one of which was built by the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team and includes hockey stick posts and a puck-studded climbing wall.

Locally owned businesses in Westgate exude a comfortable and casual vibe. Friends meet over a cup of coffee at Third Way Café on West Broad. The seasonally opened Hilltop Dairy Twist is where locals can cool off with ice cream or a slushie during the warm weather months. Whether it’s picking up specialty items or sitting down for a meal, there are several options for authentic Mexican cuisine. Koki’s Tortillas Mexican Market on Sullivant Avenue has freshly made yellow corn and giant flour tortillas, while El Jaliciense is a local favorite for its chimichangas and fast service. Adventurous foodies who enjoy a spicy kick head to Ava’s Taste of the Caribbean for jerk chicken and curry chicken bowls. Farmers market and arts festivals connect neighbors
A strong neighborhood association makes an effort to create connections among neighbors through events. Most are held at Westgate Park, including the Summer Jam West music and arts festival. The Hilltop Bean Dinner in July concentrates on the neighborhood’s history dating back to the Civil War when parts of the area were used for training the Union Army. In the fall, the Mums and Mummies festival mixes a love of flowers and Halloween. At the West Gate Lodge on West Broad Street, there’s a farmers market on the first and third Saturdays of the month from June through October.
