Venturing around Cottage Grove offers ample opportunities to find picture postcard views of the Pacific Northwest’s majestic evergreens and high-elevation railroad bridges crossing over sparkling creeks and rivers. Located 20 miles south of Eugene, Cottage Grove is a small city home of about 10,000 people along Interstate 5 and state Route 99. While classified as a city, Cottage Grove is more like a small town with a Main Street corridor featuring quaint local restaurants, old buildings adorned with colorful murals and parks and trails with artifacts highlighting the community’s rail station origins. Owing to the community’s picturesque environment and setting, movie producers of movies such as Stand By Me and Animal House filmed scenes in and around town, highlighting the Main Street area and old railroad tracks that have been transformed into walking and bicycle trails.
Global eateries on East Main Street
Living up to its nickname as The Covered Bridge Capital of Oregon, the central point of Main Street parallels a covered pedestrian bridge built to pay homage to the area’s various railroad bridges crisscrossing the landscape. In this downtown area, folks can stroll over to Stacy’s Covered Bridge Restaurant, a cozy but elevated American restaurant with steak, seafood, chicken and pasta dishes inside a former bank building. Folks can explore a global culinary scene on East Main Street, as restaurants such as Oba Ramen and Lamona Mexican highlight international dishes and flavors. An eclectic mix of shops also adds to the city’s character, with merchants specializing in bicycles, games, toys, vintage books, western cowboy apparel and antique furniture. Near downtown, folks can buy fresh produce and agricultural goods at the Old Mill Farm Store. Farther away, when East Main Street approaches I-5, folks shop for groceries and other essentials at Safeway.
