Lantern Village features Dana Point Harbor and a thriving downtown

Founded in the 1920s, Lantern Village was named after the lights of ships docked at Dana Point Harbor, the centerpiece of the neighborhood and the entire city. The area’s coastline offers everything from sea caves to sandy stretches to dolphin spotting. However, the community’s Lantern District, a hip and growing downtown, may be the area’s crown jewel. “It’s completely overhauled, very walkable to all new shops, restaurants and wine bars. It’s so cool that you can walk everywhere. That's the best part,” says Shelly Reyland, broker/owner at RE/MAX Coastal Homes, with over two decades of experience in the area. “It’s an eclectic, cool beach community that keeps getting better and better.”

The growing Lantern District has walkability and wide-ranging retail

Less than a mile north of the ocean, the Lantern District is a revitalized downtown, flourishing with an assortment of retail as well as new projects like Del Prado Place, a mixed-use development expected to be completed in December 2025. The area has a wide array of cuisines, from casual to upscale dining. “The restaurants are amazing. Truly Pizza is one of the best pizza restaurants in the country,” Reyland says. Truly Pizza even ranks among the top 100 pizza restaurants internationally in 2025, according to the Best Pizza Awards. It serves pies at patio-only seating, where lemon trees and blankets add to the ambiance. More options range from the French brunch spot Maison Cafe + Market to StillWater Spirits & Sounds, known for its cocktails and a calendar booked with live music. Locally owned shops include Dana Point Music for lessons and instruments, plus Lighthouse Thrift Store for furniture. Ralphs is the area’s supermarket, although some opt for Buena Vista Market, which specializes in Mexican ingredients and authentic tacos.

Waterfront views from Dana Point Preserve to Doheny State Beach

Lantern Village is renowned for its slice of the West Coast, where nature preserve, beach and harbor converge. In the southwest corner of the community, Dana Point Preserve features hiking trails along cliffs, down to an ecosystem of tide pools and caves, where pirates used to hide according to local legends. Dana Point Harbor stretches across much of Lantern Village’s southern edge, and while it’s a top boating spot, it has many more activities: whale watching, kayaking and walking on the breakwater at sunset. Doheny State Beach, in the southeast part of the neighborhood, is most famous for its surfing, with a rocky shoreline better suited for activities like longboarding than swimming.

Mediterranean homes, contemporary homes and condos in Lantern Village

Initially conceptualized as a Spanish-style village, Lantern Village has centrally located grid-style streets lined with palm trees and single-family homes, including historic Mediterranean homes. These can range between $2 million and $3 million. For a more suburban feel, there are cul-de-sacs on the neighborhood’s east side that offer contemporary houses, ranging from $3.2 million to $6.7 million. Condos, located throughout Lantern Village, range from $1 million to $2.5 million, many with HOA fees from $350 to $650 per month. Regardless of housing style, the community is one of the most sought-after within Dana Point. “It sells really well. It’s always been desirable, but now it’s more desirable than ever because of the walkability to the downtown area,” Reyland says. “Some homes fly off the market when priced well, and some have ocean views.”

Events like Seaside Sessions and the Boat Parade of Lights

One of the neighborhood’s most beloved events is Seaside Sessions: local artists performing acoustic songs at the wharf in Dana Point Harbor throughout the summertime. “There are great events in winter like the boat parade and lights in the harbor,” Reyland says. The Festival of Lights creates a sparkling atmosphere at nightfall from mid-November to mid-January, and for over 50 years, Lantern Village has put on the Boat Parade of Lights as a holiday celebration in December.
