Ruby Hill Park is one of the largest parks in Denver
Ruby Hill Park takes up the eastern part of the neighborhood. “It’s one of the biggest parks, and highest points, in Denver,” Alvidrez says. Locals can ride the BMX trail or watch a baseball game before visiting the community garden while their kids run around the playground. In January, Denver Parks and Recreation works with Winter Park Resort to open the Ruby Hill Rail Yard, which uses manmade snow to create a place for skiers and snowboarders to ride the slopes. People can hike along the Sanderson Gulch and use the gym and indoor pool at Athmar Recreation Center. Overland Golf Course, the oldest course still open west of the Mississippi, features an 18-hole course.Levitt Pavilion Denver puts on free concerts
Levitt Pavilion Denver is a nonprofit concert space in Ruby Hill Park, hosting over 50 concerts and community events during the summer. “Most concerts are free of charge, and residents really love it,” Alvidrez says. These free events include the annual Colorado Dashiki Festival, which celebrates African culture with vendors, food, music and dance. People also attend events throughout Denver, such as the Underground Music Showcase. “It’s the biggest music festival in Denver,” Alvidrez says.Bungalows and ranch styles common in Ruby Hill
Sidewalks border the residential streets of Ruby Hill, interrupted by driveways that lead to garages and carports. Homes sit on grassy lawns that are often decorated with bushes and flowers. Tall trees sit in many properties’ front and back yards, with several fenced-in. Bungalows sit among red brick and vinyl ranch styles, and some split levels are scattered throughout. Most of these mid-20th century homes cost between $350,000 and $550,000.Locals visit stores and restaurants near Ruby Hill
Residents of Ruby Hill are only a short drive from restaurants and stores. “Pho 95 is a great pho place, and the best Mexican food in Denver is at Torres,” Alvidrez says. These are just a few eateries along Federal Boulevard, just outside the neighborhood. Locals also travel to downtown Denver, where they can get dinner and drinks at places such as My Brother’s Bar, the oldest bar in the city. People get their groceries from Save A Lot, about 1 mile away, and can shop at one of several farmers markets throughout Denver. “Ruby Hill is close to the best farmers market in Denver, the South Pearl Street Farmers Market,” Alvidrez says. During the summer, residents only need to drive about 2 miles to explore the selection of fresh produce, baked goods and artisan cheeses while listening to live music and visiting food trucks. Walmart is about 1 mile away, Target is about a 4-mile drive and Lowe’s is about 6 miles away.Schmitt Elementary is in the middle of the neighborhood

Lincoln High offers several clubs and extracurriculars, including a bilingual youth theater program.Locals get around by bike or car
The Regional Transportation District has several bus stops along State Route 88, locally called Federal Boulevard, and West Mississippi Avenue, although Alvidrez says most residents drive or ride their bikes. “It’s a very bike-accessible area,” she says. The Denver International Airport is about 30 miles away, and the closest emergency room is at AdventHealth Porter, about a 3-mile drive.Keeping warm in Ruby Hill
During the winter, Ruby Hill and the rest of Denver are prone to extreme cold and severe winter weather. Residents are encouraged to dress warmly, limit the time they and their pets spend outside and keep dry. To prevent frozen pipes, homeowners can open cabinet doors near exposed pipes and turn a faucet onto a slow drip. They should also know where the water shut-off valve is if a water line breaks.
