Bayou Gauche is a “sportsman’s paradise” southwest of New Orleans
With humble beginnings as a remote fishing village, Bayou Gauche retains much of its secluded character. However, this small, rural community on a canal-locked island east of Des Allemands is growing as more people seek its solitude and laid-back, outdoorsy lifestyle. “It’s a little out of the way of everything. You take one road in and one road out,” says Tessa Dempster, a St. Charles Parish native and a Realtor with GL Realty Group. “If you need to go to Walmart or anything like that, you have a 20-minute drive. You can’t buy gas or anything in Bayou Gauche.” Dempster adds that many residents have owned their homes for generations, but new subdivisions and good schools are attracting newcomers. “A lot of people like to move there because of the school system being so highly regarded.” According to the CAP Index, Bayou Gauche has a low crime risk. It receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score.
Single-family homes close to Bayou des Allemands
Bayou Gauche is predominantly wetlands and farmland. Its narrow residential streets are concentrated on the southern end of a canal-wrapped island. Most properties are brick ranch-style homes and Acadian-style houses. “There are a lot of older homes built in the 1970s and 1980s. And now there are several new subdivisions,” Dempster says. The private Kerry’s Pointe offers custom designs along Bayou des Allemands, and Beau Place Estates features recently built neo-traditional homes. Lots often exceed a third of an acre, with mature trees shading spacious front yards neatly manicured with garden beds and backyards hosting pools and patios. Living space is also ample, averaging more than 2,200 square feet. Home prices typically fall between $120,000 and $500,000. Land is also available with prices as low as $65,000 for less than one acre and up to $5 million for more than 400 acres.
A highly rated school district with a history of Cajun dance
St. Charles Parish Public Schools serves Bayou Gauche and earns an A overall rating from Niche, which ranks it the best school system in the New Orleans area for 2025. The district offers school choice as required by Louisiana state law. The schools assigned to Bayou Gauche start with the A-rated Allemands Elementary, which offers kindergarten through second grade. The school has a longstanding tradition of teaching Cajun dance as a part of physical education. “The kids dress in old-time clothes and hold hands. They perform at local festivals,” Dempster says. Students can move on to the A-minus-rated R.J. Vial Elementary for third through fifth grades. J.B. Martin Middle earns an A, and Hahnville High gets a B-plus.
Outdoor recreation in Bayou Gauche
With the bayou, Lake Des Allemands and Lake Salvador close by, spending time on the water is a part of daily life here. “A lot of people are commercial fishermen for a living. They fish and crab,” says Dempster, who describes Bayou Gauche as a sportsman’s paradise. The expansive Salvador Wildlife Management Area, home to animals like waterfowl, nutria and deer, offers tens of thousands of acres for hunting. “They have leases and they go camp for the weekend,” she says. Residents without a dock can use the public boat launch at the end of Bayou Gouche Road to access the waterways. On the island, homes surround Bayou Gauche Park, the community’s sole public park along First Street. It features a playground and picnic shelter, as well as a walking path looping around a large multi-purpose field. Youth sports teams play and practice at American Legion Field in Des Allemands, which features multiple baseball fields, batting cages and a concessions stand.
Shopping and grabbing a bite to eat on Highway 90
A few shops and restaurants dot Highway 90 nearby in Des Allemands. Frank’s Supermarket has been locally owned and operated since the late 1970s. “It’s small, but it’s perfect for running in and grabbing what you need. Everybody loves their cakes,” Dempster says. Allen’s Ace Hardware is next door and Family Dollar sits across the highway. For decades, Spahr's Seafood Restaurant has been a destination for Cajun-style fried catfish, reeled in from the area’s many bayous. More eateries and retailers, including Walmart Supercenter, are available in nearby towns. “They do a lot of their shopping in Raceland and Houma,” Dempster adds. “Once you hit Highway 90, it’s straight and there’s pretty much no red lights.” St. Charles Parish Hospital offers medical care in Luling, about 10 miles away.
Sampling Cajun flavors at the Louisiana Catfish Festival
Bayou Gauche is part of the Des Allemands community, which hosts the highly anticipated Louisiana Catfish Festival at St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church every September. The weekend-long event dates to 1975. “Des Allemands is the catfish capital of the world,” Dempster says. Visitors mingle with residents as they enjoy various catfish-centered dishes, from a simple fried catfish plate to catfish couvillon. Live music keeps the atmosphere upbeat. “Everybody just talks, hangs out and drinks beer. People come from all over the state,” she adds.
Bayou Gauche is a car-dependent community
Bayou Gauche Road, the main route on and off the island, connects to Highway 90 in Paradis, less than six miles north. “When you drive down Bayou Gauche Road, it’s open cattle fields on both sides with canals,” Dempster says. Downtown New Orleans is about 35 miles away, while Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is around a 22-mile drive via Interstate 310.
Hurricanes are a reality in low-lying St. Charles Parish
Bayou Gauche residents have to be prepared for potential evacuations and the impacts of flooding and high winds throughout the Atlantic Hurricane Season. “When a storm is coming, we go to the grocery store and stock up on beer, because Cajun men love beer,” Dempster says. “Whoever has the nicest house, you go hang out with them while the storm passes. We usually leave if it’s a Category 3 or more.” She adds that the southern portion of Bayou Gosh Road typically floods during hurricanes, and power outages can last weeks. “Homes often have whole-house generators. You try and run the necessities. You plug in your fridge and an AC unit. It’s always 95 degrees in August when they hit us.” Some homes close to Bayou des Allemands rest on stilts, and all homeowners are encouraged to have flood insurance.
