Woodland Heights
Styles stay true to original architecture
Architectural styles include bungalow, Colonial revival and American Foursquare architectural styles from the neighborhood's turn-of-the-century roots. "We don't have too many new homes here," says Cameron Gale, a resident for five-and-a-half years and president of the Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association. "And the homes that are remodeled are kept to the original style." Houses in Woodland Heights sell for between $151,000 to $382,000. Lots are typically 1/8 acre, suitable for a small gathering area, and most homes have either a detached garage or driveway parking. "This is a great area for first-time homebuyers," Gale says.Ingersoll Ave. is a vibrant commercial area
At the southern border, Ingersoll Avenue is a cultural and commercial artery and one of Des Moines' trendiest entertainment districts. "It's a bustling, vibrant corridor and a lot of improvements have been made over the years to make it more walkable," Gale says. Colorful murals celebrate the area's history and heritage, and luxury apartments and condominiums are interspersed among the bars, boutiques and restaurants. One of Gale's favorite eateries is Cheese Bar. "They have delicious charcuterie, fancy grilled cheese sandwiches and large tables for people to gather," he says. Chain & Spoke is a combination bike shop/coffee house popular among locals. Noah's Ark Ristorante has been a staple of the neighborhood since 1946, serving traditional Italian cuisine. Residents don't have to travel too far for groceries. Price Chopper is a 1-mile drive on Ingersoll, and Gateway Market is a half-mile drive on local streets.High school offers AP classes
Woodland Heights is served by the Des Moines Independent Community School District, which has open enrollment. Greenwood Elementary School has a C-plus rating from Niche. Callanan Middle School has a C-minus grade. Theodore Roosevelt High School, which has a B Niche score, offers Advanced Placement classes and exams.Area surrounded by green spaces
True to its name, Woodland Heights is dense with mature trees and large green spaces, including Chamberlain Park, adjacent to Woodland Cemetery, where locals can access a playground, picnic tables and covered pavilions. Other nearby parks include Evelyn K. Davis Park, which features a playground, splash pad, basketball courts, baseball field, sand volleyball court and picnic shelters; and Good Park, with its “sprayground,” playground and sports courts.Easy commutes
MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is a 2-mile drive on back roads. The neighborhood is on a Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DARTA) bus route, making commuting convenient for residents. With its proximity to Interstate 235, Woodland Heights has easy access to other parts of the city, including Des Moines International Airport, a 4.4-mile drive on local streets.A rich history
Woodland Heights was established in 1901 as the westernmost stop along the city's new trolley line, with local developers advertising the community to young professionals as a convenient commuter town. Under the leadership of the Woodland Heights Organization, the community was one of the first in the city to be officially designated as an "established neighborhood" in 1991.Incidents do occur
It's important to note that the CAP Index in Woodland Heights is 6/10, indicating moderate crime. The Violence Interruption Project (VIP) is an initiative approved by the Des Moines City Council in 2021 to address gun violence affecting at-risk youth.
