A Duluth community tucked away from the noise

Hunters Park is a neighborhood on the outskirts of Duluth that bridges the gap between suburbia and beyond. Meandering residential streets connect with two of the city’s most inviting green spaces, the W.R. Bagley Nature Area and the Hartley Nature Center. These two areas encompass roughly half of the community’s geography, stretching for miles farther into rural Duluth. Hunters Park’s eastern half is residential, bisected by Woodland Avenue, which stretches south toward downtown. “Hunters Park, to me, would be considered a bedroom community,” says Realtor Tommy Archer of Coldwell Banker Realty. “There’re some old houses that were built way, way back, back when Woodland Avenue was a dirt road in the early 1900s.” Older homes and the seclusion they offer don’t draw as much attention as Downtown Duluth, and for longtime residents, that’s just fine. “I think it’s just a well-liked, quiet little community.”

Single-family homes with a bit of privacy

Much of the housing in Hunters Park is on the east side, with residential streets passing through the wooded landscape. Multifamily housing is an option, but most locals buy rather than rent. Woodland Avenue and Arrowhead Road serve as access points to outside areas. Plots of land average about 7,000 square feet or less, usually featuring a private driveway. “There’re no big views from Hunters Park, necessarily, except for on Skyline Parkway,” says Archer. “But when you get one, it’s a beautiful view.” Popular styles include ranches, split-levels and traditional homes. Buyers can expect a three- or four-bedroom home to cost between $330,000 and $700,000.

Hiking, fishing and sightseeing in Hunters Park

Hunter Park’s west side is densely forested, known as an ideal hiking destination. The Superior Hiking Trail winds north and south at a half-moon sort of bend, connecting the trailhead’s starting point to Hartley Nature Center. “There’s a trout creek that runs through there,” says Archer. After parking in the dedicated lot, folks can hike north through the trees past Hartley Pond and reach the campus. More than 600 acres remain open to the center’s some 30,000 annual visitors, who stop in to see the handful of animals and get active year-round. The center isn’t beholden to the summer months. Adults can rent gear and even benefit from lessons when cross-country skiing season hits. Farther south, there’s the W.R. Bagley Nature Area, a preserve chock-full of panoramic views, slender trees and woodland wildlife. This area has a pond that’s adjacent to one of the few apartment complexes in Hunters Park.

Life close to Downtown Duluth

Like other Duluth suburbs, accessing downtown is easy by car, with the 5-mile stretch taking just 10 minutes. The Duluth Transit Authority follows nearly the same trajectory but takes approximately 30 minutes to reach Downtown Duluth. Taking the bus south into Downtown Superior is a 12-mile commute lasting more than an hour. Six miles in the opposite direction, the drive to Duluth International Airport takes 11 minutes, while the bus would make for a hour and twenty-minute trip.

Duluth is known for its rough winters

Winters in Duluth can be unrelenting. Due to heavy snowfall and the chances of getting stranded by a blizzard, the city maintains an online document for winter preparedness detailing what to do in these situations. That said, locals can rest assured that the city takes inclement weather quite seriously. Street maintenance, for example, has a three-tier priority system to determine which streets demand the most attention from snowplows and the like.
