Morley Heights-Parkview
Neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota
St Louis County 55803, 55804
Ample areas for outdoor fun
Morley Heights-Parkview touches two of northern Duluth’s prized green spaces. One is Janette Pollay Park, a nearly 20-acre wooded area through which a branch of Amity Creek flows. Although the park lacks typical amenities like playground and sports courts, its centrally located cabin is used by Girl Scout troops for camping. Farther north along Jean Duluth Road, Lake Park Athletic Complex is known for its baseball, softball and soccer fields. Jean Duluth Dog Park is adjacent. Northland Country Club is an 18-hole course designed by renowned architect Donald Ross and is among the country's Top 100 classic course. Come fall, the Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve becomes one of Duluth’s prime recreational areas. More than 200 acres of wooded trail systems offer a day hike with wildlife views. Bird watchers come in September and October to observe the migration of birds of prey. On the eastern edge of the neighborhood, horse farms such as Sweet Water Farm Equestrian sell, board horses and train riders for shows.Casual dining along Woodland Avenue
All the community’s restaurants are consolidated on the south end, just past Skyline Parkway. The intersection of this thoroughfare and Woodland Avenue hosts a handful of casual dining spots such as Chilly Billy’s, which serves breakfast staples and frozen yogurt treats, and Bulldog Pizza & Grill, a sports bar. Farther down Woodland Avenue, folks stop into Tavern on the Hill for a burger or cocktail. For groceries, there’s Mount Royal Market. This shop has the usual selection of deli meats, produce and bagged goods, with the added bonus of Caribou Coffee next door.Older homes along worn streets
Six streets intersect on the north side, forming a relatively small area of single-family homes, which vary in lot size. Many of the homes in this area are from the first half of the 20th century, several with updated, almost modern-looking exteriors. Broker Frank Messina of Messina & Associates Real Estate compares the home search to that of car shopping. “Some people like really fancy homes; other people want something functional. Some want new homes, some want the older homes,” he says. These older ranch and bungalow styles average between $250,000 and $450,000. Farther south around Morley Heights Park, curving streets feature bungalows, traditional and ranch-style homes, many of which have three bedrooms. These sell for between $240,000 and $420,000. New construction is rare.Reaching downtown by bus
Because the neighborhood is slightly closer to rural Duluth than others nearby, the 5-mile drive into Downtown Duluth takes about 17 minutes. Residents can get there in 35 minutes by bus. The Duluth International Airport lies seven miles west, taking only 15 minutes to reach by car and a far lengthier hour and 17 minutes by bus.Crime in Morley Heights-Parkview
