Lyndon
Suburban Neighborhood in East Syracuse, New York
Onondaga County 13066, 13078
Comfortable homes on large lots
For the most part, Lyndon’s homes are built on quiet residential roads, well off busier streets like NY 5 and E. Genesee. Many are built atop hills and surrounded by lush greenery in the summertime. Neighborhoods here rarely conform to the image of a suburban lifestyle. Instead, houses are spaced out on large lots with clear property lines. There are no sidewalks in the residential areas. Instead, neatly trimmed lawns extend to tree-lined roads. Most of these homes—primarily split-levels, Cape Cods, colonials and ranch-style—were built amid the post-World War II suburban boom. Paul Mandelis, president of G & J Home Remodeling, which is based in Lyndon, says these older homes have a lot of character to them. Colonial homes vary in price from $325,000 to $750,000. Newer, custom-built houses along Onondaga Golf and Country Club can run more than $1 million. Lyndon has a notably low crime score of 2 out of 10 on the CAP Index.Shopping strips and grocery stores
From Fayetteville to DeWitt, Genesee Street (NY 5) is lined with banks, wellness centers and stores. Lyndon’s stretch includes a Hobby Lobby, Talbots and Chicos. Grocery shoppers will also find Wegmans and Aldi there. In nearby Fayetteville, the Towne Center features a TOPS Friendly Market, Target and commercial retail like TJ Maxx. Brooklea Drive is lined with boutiques and flower beds. Nearby restaurants include Avicolli’s Coal Fire, which serves hand-fired pizzas. The string lights and rodeo décor at Bull and Bear Roadhouse complement a wide draft beer selection and greasy American burgers.Music and films in the summertime
Summer in Fayetteville looks like outdoor films at Beard Park and local musicians at the Limestone Plaza. For those looking to travel a bit closer to the downtown scene, Syracuse is bustling with events throughout the warmer months. Cultural festivals like Polish Fest and Greek Fest are frequented alongside the New York State Blues Fest and The Great New York State Fair near Onondaga Lake. In the fall, Lyndon residents can head to the Fayetteville Festival for food trucks, vendors and fireworks. 8 miles up the road, Green Lakes State Park plays host to a Halloween Drive-Thru, as well as 5K fundraisers and other athletic events.Sky high SAT scores
“Most students in Lyndon attend schools in the Jamesville-DeWitt School District,” says Barbano. Moses DeWitt Elementary School serves kindergarten through fourth grade. The school is rated the fifth-best elementary school in Syracuse. It has a 16-1 student-teacher ratio and an A rating from Niche. Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School has an A rating and an 11-1 student-teacher ratio. Jamesville-DeWitt Senior High School also has an A rating. The high school boasts an average SAT score of 1320 and a 99% proficiency rate in math. Niche ranks the high school as the second best in the Syracuse area.Woodlands and golf courses
Thanks to the many nearby streams, ponds and lakes, including Lake Ontario and Oneida Lake, most Syracuse neighborhoods like Lyndon have many natural areas and woodlands for locals to explore. Butternut Creek Recreation and Nature Area is a 67-acre green space featuring a paved trail, wooded areas, creek views and a fishing dock. At Canal Landing Park in Lydon, kids can enjoy the playground while adults take advantage of the fitness stations and trails. Golfing fans will enjoy the many area courses catering to all skill levels within a mile or two of Lyndon. Avid golfers may want to consider joining either the Onondaga Golf & Country Club off Route 5 or the Lyndon Golf Course on Genesee Street for member benefits year-round.Traveling around the town
Although New York’s Centro bus system provides stops for Lyndon residents along Highway 5, the area remains car dependent. “The local government did put sidewalks in a few years back, but nobody really walks because there’s no place to walk to—the sidewalks don’t lead anywhere,” says Barbano. The 7-mile commute to Syracuse is best traveled along Highway 5. Lyndon locals are privy to convenient interstate access. I-481 is an extension of I-81, heading from Jamesville to North Syracuse. It is a 15-mile drive to Syracuse Hancock International Airport. NorthEast Medical Center is less than 5 miles north of N Burdick Street.Local music and summer fun
