Eagle Nest is a mountain community surrounded by natural beauty
Eagle Nest is a small community in northern New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Located along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway at an elevation of 8,200 feet, it’s a popular summer resort destination, offering camping, fishing, hiking and gold exploration. Originally known as Therma, the village adopted its current name in the 1930s after the completion of the Eagle Nest Dam, which created nearby Eagle Nest Lake. “It’s less of a year-round tourist destination than Angel Fire or Taos, but people do come for the hiking and fishing — it’s one of the only places in New Mexico where you can ice fish,” says Broker John Johnston of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, who has lived in the area for over a decade.

Quaint cabins on large lots
Housing in Eagle Nest mostly consists of ranch-style homes, cabins and cottages, many of which sit on lots of an acre or more; some manufactured properties can be found around town. It’s also common for incoming residents to buy up a parcel of land and design their own home. Home prices in Eagle Nest vary substantially and depend as much on acreage as on home size. Smaller cottages and ranch-style homes on half-acre lots generally sell for between $190,000 and $300,000, while more spacious homes and properties can go for anywhere from $300,000 to $600,000. Lots of land have sold for around $30,000 to nearly $150,000. Wildfire risk is a concern in parts of the community, particularly those closer to the mountains, and can impact home insurance prices.

Eagle Nest Lake State Park is right next to town
Eagle Nest is more or less surrounded by recreational opportunities. “It’s a bit quieter than some other places, but if you like the outdoors, you’ll never run out of things to do,” says Johnston. The closest and most visible is Eagle Nest Lake, a 2,400-acre lake formed by the Eagle Nest Dam. The lake was turned into a state park in 2004, and offers fishing, boating and camping in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. Enchanted Eagle Park in the center of town features a playground and serves as a focal point for community events. The mountains surrounding Eagle Nest are mostly contained within Carson National Forest and include Wheeler Peak and Baldy Mountain, two of the most hiked mountains in the state. Countless opportunities for skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing and fly fishing can be found in the national forest, as well as at regional parks like Cimarron Canyon State Park, located just a few miles east of Eagle Nest.

Locals head to Taos and Angel Fire for shopping
Shopping in Eagle Nest is limited, which isn’t surprising given that the year-round population is just over 300 people. The closest thing Eagle Nest has to a supermarket is the Corner Market gas station convenience store, so locals generally head to Lowe’s Market in Angel Fire to pick up groceries. It’s a little over 12 miles south by car to both the supermarket and Angel Fire’s small retail corridor, which is home to a couple hardware stores, a few furniture shops and an assortment of restaurants. Those in search of a broader shopping experience will need to go at least as far as Taos, a roughly 30-mile drive. Taos is also home to the nearest hospital. While Eagle Nest doesn’t have much in the way of retail, it is home to a number of highly rated restaurants, including the always-popular Eagle Nest Cafe, which has been part of the local landscape for decades.
