Eden Isle is a picturesque community in the Northshore region
Stationed along the northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain about 30 miles from downtown New Orleans, Eden Isle offers suburban-style waterfront living. Just a few miles from an array of nearby amenities, Eden Isle is considered one of the more desirable communities on the Northshore. However, flooding from major storms is a point of concern. Hurricanes have decimated the area in the past, though the region has managed to fight its way back from severe destruction. "Louisiana people are very resilient. They build back, and they build back to new codes if they need to raise their homes or make it a little more equipped to handle hurricanes," says Katie Guasco, who serves as Chief Marketing Officer for Visit The Northshore. "It has thrived, and that's thanks to its close proximity and convenience to New Orleans."

Eden Isle is known for its wide range of home styles
Homes in Eden Isle come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Lakeview Drive features colorful waterfront homes on pilings, while subdivisions enclosed by the community's network of canals feature New Traditional and French Provincial-inspired residences alongside late 1900s brick ranches. Steep-roofed Acadian-style builds are also popular throughout the area. Many homes list between $250,000 and $600,000, though custom estates with landscaped yards may sell in the $700,000 to $1.5 million range. Buyers may also find townhouses and condos priced from about $100,000 to $400,000. The housing market in Eden Isle is less competitive than the national average, largely due to the threat of flooding from major storms.

Salmen High School was rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina
Students in Eden Isle are served by the St. Tammany Parish School District. Children may go to the nearby W.L. Abney Elementary School, which earns a B-minus on Niche. St. Tammany Junior High School receives a B rating. Teens can attend the C-rated Salmen High School on Spartan Drive. After irreparable damaged by Hurricane Katrina, Salmen High was rebuilt in 2010. It's now elevated 14 feet above sea level and features "tuck-under" parking for staff and visitors.
Fritchie Park hosts the award-winning Crawfish Cook-Off
At Northshore Beach, some Eden Isle locals swim and sunbathe beside Lake Ponchartrain. Golfers hit the greens at the 18-hole Oak Harbor Golf Club in the center of the community. Outdoor enthusiasts can also explore the nearby Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge in search of bald eagles and alligators, or they can take their boats out onto Lake Ponchartrain to fish. Fritchie Park sits just north of the community and contains several sports fields where local teams practice. The park comes alive during crawfish season, hosting the annual all-you-can-eat Crawfish Cook-Off each April. A community staple for 19 years, the single-day event draws visitors from across Louisiana and beyond for its live entertainment and, of course, endless crawfish buffet. It was named a 2023 Signature Event of the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. "It's one of our largest events in the parish," Guasco says. "Even with crawfish kind of being scarce right now, they're making it happen. They boiled about 60,000 pounds of crawfish this year, so it's just a really great opportunity for people to get out and experience a little taste of Louisiana."
Close by, Fritchie Park is a popular 176-acre sports facility and green space.

The Blue Crab is a favorite among Eden Isle residents
Louisiana is known for its great seafood, so Eden Isle residents don't need to look far to find acclaimed eateries. Phil's Marina Cafe offers picturesque views of the Grand Lagoon along with signature crawfish and fried shrimp, while The Blue Crab is revered for its hushpuppies and live entertainment. "That's just a very casual waterfront hangout," Guasco says. "Live music on weekends, spectacular waterfront views, just being a very family-friendly, laid-back neighborhood environment, which is a really great way to describe Eden Isle and the Slidell area. That waterfront dining is something we're known for." Boaters can moor behind GilliGil's Island, another neighborhood eatery with patio seating overlooking the canal. For groceries, locals can visit Cash Saver just north of the community. There's also a Walmart Neighborhood Market a few miles up Ponchartrain Drive. Big-box retailers like Best Buy and Kohl's are in the Fremaux Town Center, about 6 miles away.

Carnival parades in Olde Towne Slidell
In February and March, throngs of tourists make their way to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras. The week-long celebration involves dozens of parades with elaborate costumes and floats. In Olde Town Slidell, the festivities take place on a smaller scale, with no more than eight Carnival parades. Olde Towne also hosts a zombie crawl around Halloween and a St. Patrick's Day parade.
I-10 leads locals straight to New Orleans
Locals are often car-dependent, but they have access to major roads and highways. Route 11 and Interstate 10 both run through Eden Isle and lead residents across Lake Pontchartrain. I-10 feeds directly to downtown New Orleans, allowing day trips or commutes into the Big Easy. There's an Amtrak station in downtown Slidell, 5 miles away, and the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is approximately 40 miles from the community. Emergency care is available at the Slidell Memorial Hospital, a 5-mile drive from most homes.
Eden Isle has been impacted by hurricanes in the past
Eden Isle residents should be wary during hurricane season. The community sits in a flood zone and was devastated when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the New Orleans metropolitan area in 2005. However, due to the relatively frequent threat of major storms, locals take hurricane preparation very seriously. First responders take part in regular emergency preparedness trainings, while residents assemble disaster kits and evacuation plans in advance of potential natural threats.
