Green spaces connected by level bike paths
The Cal Young neighborhood is central to convenience; just across the Willamette River from downtown Eugene, it has several big-box retail stores, two malls and more than five grocery stores scattered along several major thoroughfares. Besides options for every shopping need, Cal Young contains a park every mile or so throughout the neighborhood, many connected by bike lanes and paths on an easily navigable terrain. “The area is really known for bike riding, walking and hiking,” says Jeremy Starr, a real estate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “It’s flat, and a lot of people prefer the flatter ground to the hills on the southeast and southwest sides of the city.”
Upscale restaurants and Trader Joe’s in Oakway Center
Oakway Center is one of a few shopping centers in Cal Young, anchored by Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy and the only Trader Joe’s in the city. Next door, Sabai serves traditional Thai dishes and flavors from the Pacific Rim in a calming interior with earthy tones and minimalistic lines accented by reclaimed wood. Carefully plated, Mediterranean-inspired dishes are paired with Elizabeth Chambers Cellar varietals in an upscale dining room—with live music on Saturday evenings—at Elizabeth’s Wine Lounge. The Valley River Center is comprised of Macy’s, JCPenney, Adventure! Children’s Museum and a Regal Cinema immediately west of the neighborhood. For groceries, shoppers have various choices: WinCo Foods, Costco Wholesale, Walmart, Safeway and two Markets of Choice are all within reach.

Three pools at Sheldon Pool and Fitness Center
Cal Young is dotted with parks and green spaces, several of which are conveniently located next to neighborhood schools. Tennis courts, baseball diamonds, soccer and football fields and a track comprise Sheldon Sports Park, behind Sheldon High School. Next door, the Sheldon Pool and Fitness Center has a 25-yard tank, a deep-diving well and a warm-water pool where swimming lessons, water fitness classes and baby swim times take place. Cal Young Middle School is also next to a community sports park, and smaller parks with playgrounds and sand pits—like Oakmont and Creekside parks—which are tucked between rows of homes.
With two courses, the neighborhood is also a golf destination. Established in 1899, Eugene Country Club’s membership includes access to its full-sized golf course and three regulation-sized tennis courts, as well as themed dinners, wine tastings, holiday parties and other social outings. For those who prefer public daily rates, the Oakway Golf Course has tee times for under $30.

Coburg Road runs along the east side of the neighborhood—a conduit to several grocery stores and the Oakway Center—while the Randy Papé Beltline connects Delta Highway and Coburg Road. Two of the Lane Transit District’s bus routes have stops along Coburg Road, connecting passengers to the rest of Eugene and accommodating cyclists. “Eugene is so bike-oriented that there are bike lanes all up and down the corridors,” says Kelly Gustafson, a real estate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeService and Starr’s business partner.
