Unique homes separated from Eugene by forest and ridges
Mid-century modern homes, 1970s split-levels and more recent estates blend effortlessly into the rolling landscape of Crest Drive, one of Eugene’s hilly southern neighborhoods. “You wouldn’t go there unless you lived there. Crest Drive itself is a through street, so it gets a lot of traffic, but the neighborhoods beyond there are very quiet,” says Susan Heisey, the owner of Bailey & Heisey Real Estate. “A lot of the homes are unique. It’s not a tract neighborhood.” Separated from the cheers of University of Oregon Ducks games and the traffic of downtown, Crest Drive is insulated by the forest of evergreen trees that climb its ridges.
Wayne Morse Family Farm and scaling Spencer Butte
Green space in Crest Drive rests on a balance of community parks and the rugged, elevated landscape in the south of the neighborhood. Wayne Morse Family Farm spans 27 acres in the center of Crest Drive, a popular gathering spot for community events and for dog owners to allow canines to play leash-free in the dog park. Lafferty Park is another neighborhood park, tucked away between homes, with a playground and views of distant mountains.
In the south of the neighborhood, Ridgeline Trail cuts through towering evergreen trees and navigates around moss-covered stumps along Blanton Ridge. The nearly 2-mile trail goes between the neighborhood’s elevated subdivisions, limited to hikers who can peacefully watch for deer or admire the trail’s wildflowers. Even farther south, the rocky summit of the 1,058-foot Spencer Butte is a popular hiking destination. As one of the highest points around the city, hikers can enjoy views of the Cascade Mountains and Willamette Valley, after braving through trails with poison oak, altitude and a rattlesnake population.

Mid-century modern homes, designed in the 1970s, and more contemporary builds from the following decade cost between $720,000 and $800,000, with new traditional estates from the late 1980s and early 1990s sprinkled throughout. Most homes in this price range come on lots between a quarter and half of an acre in size with complex, thoughtfully designed landscaping. Decks, patios and recreational vehicle parking evidence residents’ affinities for the great outdoors.
