At the heart of Emerald City
The greenest gem of Oregon’s “Emerald City” is the Whiteaker, located along the Willamette River in the heart of Eugene. The Whiteaker has long been one of America’s most eco-conscious neighborhoods, from its origins as livestock-raising land in the early 20th century to its recent history as a hub of environmentalism and vegan restaurants. Over the past few years, "the Whit" has evolved into a trendy nightlife center full of distilleries, food carts, farm-to-table fine dining venues and hip restaurants and bars. With a rich history and an ever-evolving future, the Whiteaker stands out as one of Eugene’s most unique and vibrant communities.

Greenery and gardens in "the Whit"
The Whiteaker is located near downtown Eugene, bordering the bending Willamette River to the north and embraced by the riverside Maurie Jacobs Park. This park, full of open, grassy spaces ideal for picnics and sports, offers scenic views of the river, and serves as a refuge for ducks, geese and other fauna and flora which helped Eugene to acquire its nickname. Locals may like to contribute to Eugene’s natural feel by participating in its community garden. Realtor Lauri Howes of United Real Estate Properties says, “If gardening is something you’re interested in, you’ll have to get on the waiting list for the community garden, as it’s very popular.” Also in the Whiteaker is the small, but entrancing Owen Rose Garden, with beautiful floral displays, paths for both bikers and pedestrians, and space for the Whiteaker’s many live music performances. Howes says, “It’s a great destination in Eugene; the roses here smell so beautiful during the summer and the fall.”

This community’s fondness for nature is apparent when one visits the locally owned grocery store, Bruns’ Apple Market, which is brimming with both fresh fruits and vegetables and farm-to-market meat products. The Whiteaker is also home to highly rated and notable restaurants in the neighborhood like the Japanese-themed Izakaya Meiji Co., the Ninkasi Brewing craft brewery and the locally acclaimed Tacovore counter-service taco restaurant. Around the corner from Izakaya is Scobert Gardens, a small park often home to fresh vegetable stands and arts and crafts displays selling tie dye clothing and other artsy creations.

Public safety
The Whiteaker receives a 6 score from the CAP Index, indicating higher-than-average crime. Oregon’s crime rate has spiked since 2020, although Eugene’s crime rates have begun a slight decline since then due to the Eugene Police Department’s enactment of programs like CAHOOTS for crisis assistance purposes, which diverts calls from police to more appropriate handlers.
