Outdoorsy Jefferson County area close to busier cities

Surrounded by lush parkland and views of the Front Range mountains, Fairmount is a small unincorporated community near Arvada and Golden, Colorado. “It’s a little pocket sandwiched in between two major cities. When you’re there, you’re in sprawling land—a little sliver of paradise,” says Venus Howard, broker associate for Vindiola Group. Fairmount is known for its stunning vistas, housing variety and high-rated schools, which are draws for homebuyers, according to Howard, and multiple hiking and biking trails are easily accessible. Major employers include Coors Distributing Company and Lockheed Martin Space Systems.

Hiking trails at North Table Mountain

Several parks are scattered throughout Fairmount, with trailheads, lakes and green spaces. Van Bibber Park has paved and unpaved walking paths and an observation deck overlooking the Van Bibber Creek wetlands. North Table Mountain has over 15 miles of rocky and dirt-packed trails weaving through the bluffs of the Rocky Mountains. The public Applewood Golf Course has 18 holes, and the famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre is also 12 miles south via Interstate 70.

Multiple styles and lot sizes in Fairmount

The residential streets in Fairmount are a mixture of well-paved cul-de-sacs and more narrow county roads that pass white and brown fences in the countryside. Most housing here consists of single-family properties, with some condos and townhouses near the north border. The median price for a single-family home is about $865,000. “The home age span is huge—probably over 100 years,” Howard says. Housing styles include midcentury brick ranch-style homes, split-level houses and new traditional properties between the early 2000s and 2020s. Multimillion-dollar mansions spanning the late 20th and early 21st century with multiple driveways, pristine lawns and half to two-acre lots sit closer to the Rocky Mountains.

Partying with pups at Goldens in Golden

Fairmount locals flock to Golden for annual events and get-togethers. Farmers and producers set up shop for the Golden Farmers Market on Saturdays from June to October. Since 2019, locals have braved the cold weather in Downtown Golden for the annual Goldens in Golden, an event celebrating golden retrievers. All dogs are welcome, as long as they’re friendly and leashed.

Catching rides on RTD buses

Colorado State Highway 72 connects to the east border of Fairmount, routing to Interstate 70, which leads to Denver International Airport 29 miles east. Golden is roughly 5 miles southwest, and Arvada is 5 miles east. Most people drive to get around here, but some roads, like McIntyre Street and West 52nd Avenue, have bike lanes. Regional Transportation District (RTD)-Denver buses also stop near the area. UCHealth Emergency Room is 4 miles east of Fairmount.

Staying prepared for wildfires near the Front Range

Due to its proximity to the Front Range foothills, Fairmount is more at risk of wildfires. In 2025, the Fairmount Fire Protection District merged with the Arvada Fire Protection District. They urge homeowners to keep smoke alarms installed and updated and sign up for LookoutAlert text notifications throughout the county. Residents should also keep flammable items like firewood piles and dry vegetation at least 30 feet from the home.
