Chevrolet has affordable housing with commercial access
The Chevrolet neighborhood took shape in the mid-1900s as the automotive industry revved up across Michigan. Rows of rectangular houses were built for Flint's growing blue-collar workforce at the Buick and Chevrolet plants. The closest plant closed in the 1990s, and the vintage homes now attract first-time homebuyers and real estate investors. The neighborhood is also close to downtown Flint and, on its southern border, to Miller Road, one of the largest commercial corridors in the city. "People flock to the areas around Miller Road because it has a lot of activity," says Dana Korth, an agent with Weichert, Realtors - Grant Hamady, who has over 30 years of experience selling in the city. "There are so many businesses along that corridor that will never be in danger of closing down."

Boxy ranch styles sit on gridded streets
Unlike other areas developed around the same time, Chevrolet has remained largely intact, without the vacant lots or dilapidated properties found in some Flint neighborhoods. All streets are lined with sidewalks, and backyards are shaded by mature trees. The gridded streets are lined with small ranch-style homes and bungalows with detached garages. Most are from the 1940s and ’50s, with a few from the 1920s. Since homes tend to be similar in size, price depends primarily on the level of renovation. Fixer-uppers can start as low as $20,000, while freshly renovated homes get up to $150,000. About half of residents rent. "It's a more affordable area of Flint, where you can get a home for under $50,000," says Bridget Brown, a Realtor with Re/Max Edge with over 10 years of experience. "As you head west to Flint Township, things start to get more expensive."
Many of the bungalows in Chevrolet sit on wooded lots along quiet side streets.

Close to two major shopping hubs
Chevrolet is located between Corunna Road and Miller Road, two of the city's major retail corridors. Corunna has a Kroger and several international grocery stores, while Miller has a Best Buy and Target. In addition to well-known fast-food chains, there are a few locally owned spots in the area. West Side Diner serves generous portions of burgers, fries and shakes, with décor straight out of the 1950s. Scratch BBQ and Catering opened a brick-and-mortar location in 2023 after the success of their catering business, serving house-smoked meats and sides made from scratch. Miller Road also connects to the Genesee Valley Center shopping mall 3 miles away. Many of the mall's stores have closed in recent years, but there are still a few large retailers like Barnes & Noble.
Best Buy on Miller Road gives Chevrolet locals east access to tech support and media.
Catering success led Scratch BBQ to open a bar and restaurant west of Chevrolet in 2023.

Public schools and a free early childhood education center
Eisenhower Elementary School is about a mile away and receives a D-plus grade from Niche. Kids can move on to Holmes STEM Middle School Academy, which was renovated in 2024. The middle school gets a 2 out of 10 rating from GreatSchools. Southwestern Classical Academy, rated C, is the district's primary high school. Genesee County also participates in a school-of-choice program, which means parents can apply to send their children anywhere in Flint or surrounding suburbs. Before kids are old enough to enter the classroom, Cummings Great Expectations Flint is a free, full-day and yearlong early child education center, walkable from many homes in the neighborhood.
Over 200 attending students are challenged to excel at Eisenhower Elementary School.
Flint Academy and Southwestern merged in 1989 into Flint Southwestern Classical Academy.

Neighbors pitched in to create a local park
Sarginson Park is a nearby green space with basketball courts, tennis courts and a softball field. Neighborhood volunteers helped renovate the park in 2016, adding a brand-new playground, a covered pavilion and a public grill. Swartz Creek Municipal Golf is just a few miles south, with a 27-hole course open to the public. On the neighborhood's north side, Corunna Road connects to the paved Genesee Valley Trail, which spans 8 miles across the city. The trails run over to Chevy Commons, which is being renovated to become the first state park in Genesee County.
Sarginson Park is also home to many neighborhood basketball rivalries.
The greens at Swartz Creek Valley Park are perfect for a casual off-season stroll.

Accessible bus lines and expressways
Downtown Flint is 3 miles east, accessible via bus lines along Corunna and Miller Road. The bus line also goes west to all of Miller's shopping options. Chevrolet also has easy access to all major interstates running through the city. The I-69 and I-75 interchange offers direct routes to Lansing, Detroit and the Canadian border. The McLaren Flint Hospital is 1 mile north, and Bishop International Airport is 3 miles south. Due to the nearby interstates and airport, there can be some noise pollution in the neighborhood.
The EPA recommends the use of water filters
About a decade ago, inadequate water treatment led to dangerous levels of lead in Flint's tap water. Although the Environmental Protection Agency declared the water safe in 2016, the city is still improving its water system infrastructure. For now, the EPA still advises residents to use water filters.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
