Residential Portola Springs is composed of winding roads with limited through traffic. The yards have enough room for garden beds, which the HOA often landscapes with palm trees, cypress trees and rose bushes. With names like Azul, Cielo and Sierra, the smaller developments within the community all have Mediterranean architecture, giving the community a cohesive feel resembling a Spanish village. Most of the houses were built from the mid-2010s through the 2020s and feature outdoor spaces like balconies or California rooms. HOA fees range between $150 and $400 a month, going toward lawn maintenance as well as upkeep for pools and parks. The area’s most acclaimed red rock formation is The Sinks, often described as a small version of the Grand Canyon. The mountainous area creates a major fire risk for Portola Springs, but the community is prepared to evacuate if a wildfire breaks out; the area was evacuated due to wildfires most recently in 2020. Within the neighborhood, there are many footpaths and bikeways that weave between nine parks. The popular 32-acre Portola Springs Community Park offers pickleball courts, soccer fields, a playground and a picnic pavilion. The park’s Portola Springs Community Center is a reservable space ideal for large events like parties and weddings. At smaller recreation spots like Round Canyon Park, Highland Park and Plateau Park, residents can find swimming pools as well as picnic and barbecue areas.
