Fremont is a rural village between Manchester and the Atlantic
Fremont is a historic New Hampshire village situated in the vast woodlands between Manchester and the Atlantic coast. The town traces its roots back to the 1700s, when it was a timber town that supplied eastern white pines for British ship masts. Since then, it has left its manufacturing past behind and is known for its rural lifestyle and bountiful forest scenery. Its rich history can still be seen around town at places like the Fremont Meeting House, Fremont Town Hall and the 1820 Country Market and Deli, all of which are more than a century old. “It’s a sleepy country town and that’s what people are looking for when they move here. The Main Street is very small. You blink and you miss it,” says broker Karen Lopilato of Classic Homes Realty, who has been working in real estate in the area for more than 40 years.
Cape Cods, Colonials and Traditional homes on country lanes
Fremont homes are situated along two-lane country lanes surrounded by woodlands. Prospective homebuyers will find everything from classic Cape Cods and Saltbox styles to Colonials and Traditional homes. Lot sizes are typically large, offering plenty of privacy and quiet for residents. Back decks look out at leafy trees and dense thickets that are full of local wildlife. There are also some recently built homes in the area, which is relatively rare for this region. “There’s not a lot of new construction around here, but Fremont is something of an exception. I’ve sold a handful of brand-new homes in Fremont,” Lopilato says. Prices range from around $380,000 to $750,000, depending on size, age and acreage, putting it on par with the statewide median. A handful of condos and townhomes are also available, ranging from $420,000 to $550,000.
Easy access to outdoor recreation, hiking and a 25-mile rail trail
Rockingham Recreational Trail’s Fremont Branch cuts through the wilderness, offering residents a place to walk, run and bike during the summer months. When it’s cold and snowy, it’s common to see people cross-country skiing or riding snowmobiles. The trail, which is set along a former railroad right-of-way, runs for 25 miles through the countryside and connects with nearby towns like Derry and Hampstead. There are also several hiking areas in Fremont — Glen Oakes Conservation Area and Oak Ridge Town Forest — where people can get out and enjoy the fresh air. Pawtuckaway State Park, about 7 miles north, is one of the largest state parks in southern New Hampshire. It’s a well-known destination for boating, fishing, camping and hiking.
Main Street offers historic charm, local restaurants and a 200-year-old country store
Fremont’s Main Street has a handful of shops and restaurants, including Fremont Pizzeria, a well-known Italian eatery that’s been serving the community since 1987. Right around the corner is 1820 Country Market and Deli, which has been around for even longer. It’s the fourth-oldest country store in the state. Stillwell’s Country Ice Cream is a local ice cream shop. For everything else, it’s about 5 miles to Walmart, Lowe’s and Market Basket in Epping.
Students attend Ellis School and Sanborn Regional High
Students can start their education at Ellis School, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade and gets a C-plus from Niche. The school’s students excel in math and English, with test scores well above the statewide average, according to the New Hampshire Department of Education. The next step is C-rated Sanborn Regional High School. The school had a 97% graduation rate in 2024. More than half its students go on to a two- or four-year college.
Getting around the rural countryside of southern New Hampshire
Fremont sits about 5 miles from the intersection of state routes 101 and 125, easing commute times for local travelers. It’s about 20 miles to Manchester, the state’s most populous city, and about 20 miles to Hampton, a small coastal town. Fremont doesn’t have any public transportation options, so residents will likely need a car to get around. Elliot Hospital in Manchester is the nearest medical center.
