Palm-peppered residential streets
Along residential streets peppered with palm trees, mid-to-late 20th-century ranch-style homes with attached garages feature a mix of grass lawns and drought-tolerant landscaping. Single-family homes typically range between $350,000 and $450,000, which Hedrick says is starter-home pricing for Fresno. A three-bedroom ranch-style home starts at $350,000, while a four-bedroom version with a pool costs around $450,000. Hedrick says single-family homes here are popular with investors who rent to college students. In southwest Hoover, manufactured homes in Fresno Mobile Home Estates range from $70,000 for a late-century model to $120,000 for a model from the 2020s.Staying in the sunshine at Hoover parks
Fresno State students, staff and faculty have access to athletic buildings and fields on campus, including several gyms and the Aquatics Center. At the 9-acre Cary Park, residents can practice tricks on the rails and ramps at the skate park or skate a few laps around the outdoor inline hockey rink; the park is also popular for its youth baseball field and basketball courts. Dogs are welcome at the 4-acre Rotary East Park, and the grounds also feature a playground and courts for tennis and pickleball. For baseball fans, the Granite Park Sports Complex regularly hosts youth baseball games and adult softball tournaments; nearby, residents can test their skills with indoor rock climbing at MetalMark Climbing.New library at Hoover High
Hoover is part of the Fresno Unified School District, rated B overall by Niche. Local kids can start at Wolters Elementary, rated B-minus, before moving on to Ahwahnee Middle, rated C; both schools offer an after-school program where kids can receive a healthy snack and homework help. At Hoover High, rated B, students can take dual-enrollment courses for college credit at Fresno City College. In 2024, Hoover High’s library was renovated to include a career center, counseling center and more space for student-led activities.Fresno State regularly hosts sports events in the neighborhood
For every home football game, flocks of students and neighbors dressed in red and blue (nicknamed “The Red Wave”) head to the Valley Children’s Stadium (also known as Bulldog Stadium) to cheer on the Fresno State Bulldogs; nearby, fans also attend tennis matches at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center, baseball games at Bob Bennett Stadium and track meets at Warmerdam Field. Elsewhere on campus, residents can reserve a bowling lane at Bulldog Bowl, stargaze at the Downing Planetarium and admire student exhibits at the Phebe Conley Art Gallery. North of the campus, the 1,000-acre University Agricultural Laboratory is maintained by students and includes a dairy farm, vineyard and seasonal crops; residents can purchase fresh produce from the agricultural program at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market, open Monday through Saturday.Getting around Fresno County
Routes 41 and 168 run along Hoover’s western and eastern borders, respectively, granting convenient access throughout Fresno County. Fresno Area Express buses operate throughout the neighborhood, and students, faculty and staff at Fresno State can use Bulldog Express, a campus shuttle system. Saint Agnes Medical Center is located within the neighborhood, and Fresno Yosemite International Airport is about 5 miles southeast.Shopping at Fashion Fair Mall
For groceries, residents head to the local Target along Route 41; nearby, Hedrick recommends Kenji’s Teriyaki Grill for casual Japanese fare. A couple of miles south at the Fashion Fair Mall, residents can shop for clothes at department stores like Macy’s and Forever 21, browse jewelry in designer shops like Sephora and dine at national chain eateries like Cheesecake Factory. For a casual night out, Hedrick recommends Phoenician Garden, a locally owned Mediterranean bar and restaurant known for its wraps and handcrafted cocktails. For a homestyle burger or milkshake, Hedrick suggests Triangle Drive-In, a 50s-themed diner fitted with retro furnishings like checkerboard floor tilings and vinyl seating.
