Residential roads stretch past homes north of Georgetown
Suburban streets intertwine throughout Fountainwood, a neighborhood on the northwestern outskirts of Georgetown in central Texas. Brick and stone facades line the streets, fronted by grassy lawns and often close to thickets of trees. “Fountainwood is super cool, because it’s a very heavily-wooded community with estate-sized lots,” says Sunetra “Sunny” Sutherland, a Realtor with Allure Real Estate. “There is recreation, peaceful living, tranquility and natural beauty. That’s kind of the draw of the neighborhood. There are just a few things to do, and that’s how people like it.” If locals want more to do, Interstate 35 is less than 10 miles east and links the area with Georgetown proper, Round Rock and Austin, with the state capital sitting under 40 miles south. Lake Georgetown sits even closer to the neighborhood, and the 1,297-acre reservoir is lined with over half a dozen parks and trails for outdoor recreation.
Large lots on streets branching off Jim Hogg Road
Many homes in Fountainwood sit on lots of about an acre. Sprawling, grassy lawns surround single-family homes and often have mature trees standing sentry over them. Jim Hogg Road is one of the main thoroughfares in Fountainwood and winds down the middle of the neighborhood, but most of the homes along it back up to the traffic rather than face it. “Fountainwood has peaceful, well-maintained homes,” Sutherland says. “Many of the homes are on large lots, some on estate-sized lots. I would say the homes are usually ranch-style homes or modern traditional, Craftsman-influenced homes.” Custom homes are also prevalent in the neighborhood. Many of the properties date to the 1990s and have brick, stone or siding exteriors. Prices typically fall between $600,000 and $850,000. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Parks surround Lake Georgetown south of Fountainwood
Numerous parks line the shores of Lake Georgetown, all less than 10 miles south of Fountainwood. On the north side of the lake, Jim Hogg Park has trails for hiking and mountain biking, as well as a boat ramp, and accommodates hunting and fishing. Russell Park offers trails just west. On the southern banks of the lake, Cedar Breaks Park offers views of the water, while Crockett Garden Falls features cascading water and hiking areas. Twin Springs Preserve has over 3 miles of trails west of Fountainwood. The Good Water Loop runs for more than 26 miles around the shores of Lake Georgetown and the banks of the San Gabriel River’s North Fork that feeds into the reservoir. Lake Georgetown itself is popular for boating, fishing and swimming.
Georgetown’s town square offers a variety of restaurants
Along Williams Drive, which passes by Fountainwood just north, diners can stop at Tejano Cookers BBQ & Catering or find Chinese food at Lin’s Café. With Georgetown proper less than 10 miles away, residents are also close to outlets in the city. “The brand-new Wolf Ranch Town Center has every store imaginable,” Sutherland says. “Georgetown has an amazing town square, where there is a slew of really nice restaurants, quaint antique shops and live music. The San Gabriel River also runs down there, so there are also restaurants along the river.” Wolf Ranch offers more than 80 stores, while Georgetown Square has a host of eateries that include American food at Not Your Average Joe’s and Japanese fare at Rakugaki. Grocery shoppers can stop at a Randalls right across the neighborhood’s northern boundary on Williams Drive, or head to an H-E-B about 3 miles southeast.
Heading south into Austin via Interstate 35
Drivers can get to Interstate 35 about 6 miles east of the neighborhood. “People have to go a little ways,” Sutherland says. “Georgetown is great and it’s cute, but what’s also nice is that it’s right off of Interstate 35, which is the direct route into the city. You don’t have to take the toll road.” Downtown Georgetown is less than 10 miles south of Fountainwood, while Austin sits about 35 miles in the same direction via I-35. Waco is over 75 miles north.
Events ranging from festivals to live music
Each April, Downtown Georgetown plays host to the Georgetown Red Poppy Festival. Fountainwood residents are less than 10 miles away from the three-day event, which showcases local vendors, live music, a parade and more. The festival started in the 1990s, but the poppy’s prevalence in the area can be traced back to World War I when a soldier sent poppy seeds home from Europe. The flower eventually began to grow naturally in the area. “Georgetown has a ton of festivals and is known for their red poppies,” Sutherland says. “I would say it’s the biggest festival in Georgetown.”
Other events in Georgetown proper include the Two Step Inn Festival, where past performers have included Sturgill Simpson, Miranda Lambert and Alan Jackson, and various seasonal festivities. “Georgetown Square has a bunch of historic buildings,” Sutherland says. “The Square does an annual Christmas lighting, and during the autumn time, Sweet Berry Farm is the place to go for hayrides and pumpkin patches.” Near Southwestern University in the city, the Fountainwood Observatory is open to the public, features two telescopes and puts on guided “public nights” for locals to take in the night sky.
Student involvement at Georgetown High School
Within the Georgetown Independent School District, Jo Ann Ford Elementary School sits east of the neighborhood and scores a B-plus with Niche. Students can then graduate to Douglas Benold Middle School, which receives an A-minus. Georgetown High School gets a B-plus from Niche and has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School. The high school also offers student activities like a dance team, yearbook club and color guard.
