Stucco bungalows on walkable streets
Downtown Glendale homes are packed tightly on gridded streets and often feature fenced-in front yards. Palm trees and drought-tolerant landscaping frame Spanish Revival bungalows from the mid-to-late 20th century, which display neutral stucco facades. Homebuyers can find properties in need of renovations for around $200,000, but most homes cost between $300,000 and $400,000.Take a nature walk at Sahuaro Ranch Park
Residents can usually find a shaded spot to get out of the Arizona sun to read a book from the Velma Teague Library at Murphy Park, which is part of the city hall complex that is currently undergoing renovations. Though the park is temporarily closed, Glendale is dedicated to preserving the peaceful, shaded green space locals love. While they wait for the renovations, locals can drive 3 miles north to Sahuaro Ranch Park, where they can wander the historic, landscaped ranch grounds with the park’s roaming peacocks or take their kids to the playground and ball fields.Enroll in career education courses at Apollo High
Younger students are zoned to the Glendale Elementary School District and can attend Glendale Landmark School, which has a C-minus rating from Niche, for grades kindergarten through eighth. Older students advance to the Glendale Union High School District, where they can attend Apollo High, which has a B rating. The high school offers career education courses for students to begin studying fields like health services, industrial and engineering technologies, business and computer science.Glendale Glitters sparks holiday spirit
Downtown Glendale’s largest event is Glendale Glitters, a holiday light display usually held at Murphy Park, though it was held at the Civic Center in 2023. Residents can listen to festive live music and sip hot chocolate while they wander through an illuminated winter wonderland. “People will come from all over the valley to celebrate the holidays and celebrate community and family. It’s one of the few free light displays in the area,” Sabillon says. Downtown Glendale’s holiday spirit continues at the Hometown Christmas parade, usually held in mid-December. Locals can support local artists and musicians at the Downtown Glendale Arts and Culture Festival in March.Stroll downtown or drive to Phoenix
Sidewalks line Downtown Glendale’s residential streets, making it easy to walk to the restaurants on West Glendale Avenue. Bus stops operated by Valley Metro, Phoenix’s regional transit system, can be found along North 51st Avenue and along West Glendale Avenue. State Route 60, or West Grand Avenue, creates the neighborhood’s western border and takes residents the 9 miles southeast to Downtown Phoenix. The Valley Metro’s light rail system doesn’t reach Glendale, but trains pass by on the industrial tracks by West Grand Avenue. The CAP Index crime tracking database gives this neighborhood a 9 out of 10 score, with 10 indicating highest crime.Grab lunch from La Piazza Al Forno
“We have family-owned restaurants, where you might come in for a meal or an item, but you leave with a sense of connection to that business and the community,” Sabillon says. As they stroll West Glendale Avenue, residents can find authentic fare from a diverse range of eateries. Bitz-ee Mama’s is a local favorite Mexican restaurant that serves breakfast skillets and tamales, while Haus Murphy’s is a German spot that serves bratwurst and beer with German music. They can dig into a Neapolitan pizza at La Piazza Al Forno, which has been featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Locals can easily fill their weekends by browsing the eclectic boutiques in Historic Downtown Glendale — they can shop from a collection of retailers at Retail Therapy AZ or find miniatures at Auntie Em's and Smilin' Jack's Pedal Cars. Residents often walk a block north to reach the Historic Catlin Court Retail District for more boutique shopping, but if they have to run errands, they’ll go to GS Supermarket or Food City for groceries.
