Close-knit rural communities not far from Louisville
It might only be a short drive from Louisville, but the neighborhood of Greenville – encompassing the villages of Greenville and Galena – is a bucolic haven. “It's very rural there. Most residents either farm, work from home, or commute,” says Rachel Pledger, Realtor with Keller Williams and part of the Big Red Team. Surrounded by farmland and rolling countryside, it’s a region surrounded by history, with century-old buildings and modern subdivisions sharing space. At the heart of it all, a strong sense of community keeps this region grounded.

No shortage of recreation
Athletic facilities and picnic opportunities highlight local parks. “Greenville Park off Buttontown Road has a long walking path around a playground, picnic shelter, and sports fields - the walking path features storybook stops for children,” says Pledger. This 14-acre park offers its visitors two softball fields, a basketball court, restrooms, a covered shelter and a playground. The larger Galena-Lamb Park covers 35 acres and has restrooms, a covered shelter, playground equipment, a basketball court and fields for softball, soccer and football. Not far down Route 150, residents can enjoy hiking the trails at Mount St. Francis, which spans 400 acres. Visitors interested in fishing can request to join the Mount St. Francis Lake fishing club to make use of the lake at the center of the park.

Rural homes with acreage alongside modern subdivisions
“It's a great location for people who enjoy a quiet setting or want to live in a rural area close to a big city,” says Pledger. Modern single-family homes sit in planned residential communities, with clean-cut lawns and wide sidewalks providing a buffer to low-traffic streets. Many of these ranch-style homes display exterior brick facades peppered with stone accents, and come with paved driveways and two-car garages. Deeper into the countryside, farmhouse-style residences come with acres of natural land. Manufactured homes can be found starting at $90,000, as can empty lots. Older single-family comes generally fetch from $140,000 to $400,000, while newer builds usually start around $225,000 and get up to $550,000. Larger properties with two acres or more, along with large lots of undeveloped land, usually get $600,000 or more.

Children in this neighborhood may start out at either Greenville Elementary School or Floyds Knobs Elementary School, which are home to kindergarten through fourth grade. Different ways to start the morning off right
Pledger points out that most shopping and restaurants are in nearby Floyds Knobs, but that there are a handful of businesses within the region. Residents can find their morning caffeine boost at the local Coffee Crossing, which has drive-through and dine-in options for customers. For a sweet treat, Adrienne and Co. Donuts and Desserts offers a range of baked goods, including cookies, macaroons, donuts and assorted pastries. Highlander Point Center is home to Jay C for groceries, as well as national franchises. In Greenville proper, Black Oak Gallery Fine Arts & Tattoos provides artwork to hang in the home, or to show off as a walking canvas.

Dial-a-ride service connects Greenville to the rest of Floyd County
U.S. Route 150, part of Indiana’s Historic Pathway, cuts through Greenville and extends across southern Indiana. A National Scenic Byway. Using this highway, residents are connected to the city of Louisville and surrounding southern Indiana areas. Greenville is very car-dependent and has little public transportation, although a public dial-a-ride service covers the Greenville neighborhood and surrounding Floyd County. Residents needing transport must submit their request 24 hours in advance for door-to-door service. This could be to get to Louisville Muhammed Ali International Airport, roughly 23 miles away. Norton Clark Hospital, the closest 24-hour emergency care, is 20 miles away in Jeffersonville.
An innovative library
“Galena Digital Library has a small house location off of Highway 150. This library offers community events and a small selection of hard copy books,” Pledger notes. It’s a library that focuses more on doing than reading – their “Library of Things” features activities, objects, kits and more for doing and learning. Additionally, they offer a Makerspace Room where residents can learn about and use modern maker devices including a laser etcher, a 3D printer and more.

A trip to the city for a day out
As rural as the neighborhood is, there aren’t too many events locally – instead, residents head into Clarksville, Jeffersonville and Louisville for festivities. This includes the Kentucky Derby and the Derby Festival, highlighted by the Thunder Over Louisville. Jeffersonville hosts concerts and more on the Indiana side of the river.
