Homes and schools in a desirable spot along the Penobscot River

The town of Hampden offers a more suburban alternative to nearby Bangor, with many housing options and well-established schools. Throughout history, this town has been sought after for one reason or another. In 1814, the British briefly reclaimed it as part of their campaign to turn the state of Maine into a "New Ireland” due to its advantageous position along the river. This position remains today as residents are just 5 miles from the heart of Bangor, with several shopping and dining options dotting the roads all around the community. “A lot of people end up moving here because of schools. People really like the high school and everything that it offers their kids,” says Realtor Aimi Baldwin, an associate broker with ERA Dawson-Bradford Co., REALTORS who has been serving the Bangor area for over eight years. “People also like the proximity to Bangor; it's just a really nice bedroom community.”

Residential subdivisions and 1900s colonials

Homes in Hampden are split into several residential areas built as far back as the 1920s and as recently as 2015. Ranch styles, colonial revivals, and Cape Cods are the more common styles present in town, with homes often under the shade of local red maple and black cherry trees that are common in the area. “75 to 80 percent of homes in the greater Bangor region are 1900s colonials; I live in one myself because that is what the area has,” Baldwin says. It is the newer homes that end up setting the community apart, many of which were constructed for the number of doctors and nurses who worked in the hospitals in downtown Bangor. Prices range from around $200,000 to $800,000, with some larger waterfront properties rising to $1.5 million.

Dining and fresh produce options in Hampden

Hampden offers many options for dining just a short trip from home. Coffee Break Café is a well-known brunch spot in the town center that is a “super fabulous little spot that is definitely noteworthy in Hampden,” Baldwin says. The area also has several pizza and sandwich options in town, but many head to Bangor to eat at McLaughlin's Lobsters, Seafood & Takeout for their lobster rolls and other classic Maine seafood options. Residents can grab groceries at the local Hannaford or the Hampden Farmers Market every Friday afternoon. Calkins Farm Stand is less than 2 miles south of town and offers fresh produce and flowers from local farmers right next to Bee Whisperer, a shop that provides lessons, mentoring and equipment for beekeepers in central and northern Maine.

Major U.S. Routes going to and from Bangor

U.S. Routes 202 and 1A are the main thoroughfare for the town, and Interstate 95 runs along the community’s northern border, offering streamlined access to downtown Bangor, 5 miles to the north, and Augusta, 73 miles to the south. Baldwin said the area is a lot more car friendly as there is less of a downtown area, but getting to shopping and dining is just a short drive away. The Bangor International Airport is 9 miles north of Hampden, and Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is 6 miles away along the Penobscot River.

The event has been going on since 1979 and features a parade, fireworks presentation, games and vendors, and over 14 food trucks around the high school each year. The event has been going on for so long that residents who have experienced the festivities as kids are taking their children to continue the town tradition.
