Every summer, Hartland’s Hometown Celebration kicks off with live music and fireworks and ends with a parade featuring the high school marching band and floats that roll through the downtown. Aside from its annual celebration, this village’s roughly 10,000 residents value this community for its highly rated public schools and large contemporary-style homes on spacious tree-shaded lots. “It’s a bedroom community,” says Realtor Martin Larson, who sells houses in the village with Coldwell Banker Homesale Realty. “There has been some tech growth here, but it's mostly residential, and people generally commute to Milwaukee.” The village also has access to plenty of outdoor amenities. Boaters can spend weekends on the surrounding lakes, and golfers can grab lunch, or play 18-holes at the local country club.

A broad range of property values
The median single-family home price in Hartland is $595,000, more than double Milwaukee’s median and significantly higher than the national median. Prices here can range from roughly $230,000 to upwards of $1.2 million, depending on age, size and location. “The taxes are much cheaper than Milwaukee,” Larson says. There is also a diverse mix of homes. The neighborhood of River Ridge, for example, has contemporary styles from the 1990s and early 2000s. Hartridge has split-levels, ranch-styles and condos from the 1960s and ‘70s, and the neighborhoods of Northfield and Highland Heights have wide selections of homes from the turn of the 20th century. “Hartland was a little town for so long, then it grew,” Larson says. “They don’t build anything small in Hartland anymore. Everything is designed to be bigger.”

Dining along Cottonwood Avenue and Capitol Drive
“Hartland definitely a place for people who want to get away from the big city when they come home from work,” Larson says. “It’s a village with a small, two-road downtown.” Cottonwood Avenue is lined with breweries, a sports grill and a Mexican spot. East Capitol Drive has a coffee shop, a New American restaurant and a riverside steakhouse. Just north of Wisconsin Highway 16, there is a big-box grocery store.

Biking on Ice Age National Scenic Trail
Hartland is surrounded by a dozen lakes, including the Pewaukee Lake, which is about 10 miles away in the neighboring Delafield Township . Here, residents can enjoy fishing or taking their motorboats out for a spin. Nearby, the Hartland Ice Age Marsh connects residents to the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which passes through landscapes carved by glacial flows during prehistoric times. “You’ve got these beautiful rolling hills,” Larson says. Hartland has multiple neighborhood parks that feature amenities like tennis courts, baseball fields, soccer fields and splash pads. Nixon Park has an outdoor stage that hosts concerts on summer evenings, and in the village’s northeast corner, the Legend at Bristlecone is a private country club with pools, tennis courts, clubhouses and an 18-hole golf course.
