The perfect Hideaway in East Texas
If Hideaway feels like a weekend destination in East Texas, that’s because it was originally supposed to be. First opening in 1967, Hideaway was initially envisioned as a weekend retreat between Dallas and Shreveport that could accommodate around 200 guests. Today, this gated community has around 1,700 homes and over 3,500 residents next to top-notch shopping and a highly rated school district. “It’s a lake and golfing community,” says Tim Schlesener, a resident and agent with the Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate I-20 Team. “Your monthly HOA is $284, which includes all your green fees, access to the lakes and the pools. You definitely get what you pay for.”
Three lakes and a golf course
The first thing residents will notice when driving past the entrance is the golf club, which has a driving range, pro shop and a 27-hole golf course. Locals like to go boating, fishing and waterskiing on the property’s three lakes, which take up around 235 acres in the center of the community. There are four parks around town with playgrounds, tennis courts, baseball fields and basketball courts, plus there’s a junior Olympic swimming pool on the lake’s east side that’s open over the summer. The clubhouse can also be reserved for birthdays, graduation parties and special events, and local organizations host meetups for gardening, painting and dancing.
Traditional, A-frame and lakefront homes
While most gated communities have one uniform look between their homes, Hideaway is unique in its diversity of pricing and architecture. “It’s not a community where everything has to match specific standards,” Schlesener says. “You might have a $150,000 A-frame house on one side of the street, and a $2 million house on the other side.” Many traditional homes range between 1,000 and 3,000 square feet and cost between $145,000 and $500,000, while 3,000- to 5,000-square-foot homes with up to 1-acre lots cost $600,000 to $900,000. Larger lakefront homes with private decks, his-and-hers suites and chef’s kitchens are most expensive, costing $1 to $2 million.
An annual golf tournament, auction and talent show
The Kiwanis Club of Hideaway-Lindale hosts its annual game day, luncheon and silent auction at the clubhouse in the last week of January, while the talent showcase takes place in February. The annual golf tournament in May has raised over $2.7 million for local students since 1990.
An A-rated school district in Lindale ISD
The Lindale Independent School District is one of the highest-rated school systems in Texas, earning an A on Niche. Velma Penny Elementary serves first through third-grade students, while E.J. Moss Intermediate School serves fourth through sixth-grade students. Lindale Junior High School has a Gifted and Talented program and a 16-to-1 student-teacher ratio. All three schools have A ratings on Niche. Lindale High School has a 98% graduation rate and an A-minus.
A club restaurant, local bakery and Miranda Lambert’s Pink Pistol
The clubhouse has a full-service bar and restaurant that rotates its breakfast, lunch and dinner specials throughout the week. Collin Street Bakery is southeast right outside the community and serves assorted treats like fruitcakes, sandwiches and pastries. More shopping and dining options are found east in Lindale, with restaurants like Texas Music City Grill & Smokehouse and Posados Cafe and grocery stores such as Walmart and Brookshire’s. Grammy Award-winning country star Miranda Lambert also opened a boutique in her hometown called The Pink Pistol that sells Texas-themed gifts, apparel and kitchenware.
Two highways between Tyler and Lindale
Interstate 20 is directly south of the community and runs about 5 miles east to U.S. Route 69. From there, Lindale is roughly 4 miles north, while Tyler is over 10 miles southeast. The CHRISTUS Emergency Care Center is open 24 hours and is about 7 miles east.
