“We get a lot of people looking to downsize from bigger communities, but also want the comforts of living in a suburban community with great senior services,” says Mayor Michael Book. “It truly has a big city appeal with small town flair.”

A taste of Southern living in the Midwest

According to Book, many people are attracted to the close-knit community spirit. “If you’re looking for a place that cares about you and your neighbor, it’s a place to be,” he says. “It’s like southern living. If you’re sitting on your front lawn, people will walk by and speak. You know your neighbors.”

Along with friendly neighbors, the village offers programs to make residents' lives easier. “Highland Hills is known for our senior services,” says Brooks. We take them to their doctor's appointments and grocery stores, and we have monthly senior events. So, people hear about it, and they want to be part of it.”

Pockets of homes

Residential roads are sectioned off into a small corner on the village’s southeast edge. The community's pocket of residential roads is boarded north by Harvard Road, South by Almeda Parkway, west by Warrensville Center Road and east by Northfield Road. These well-kept streets are lined with ranches, split levels and townhouses.

Between Randolph Parkway and Alameda Parkway, single-family homes sell anywhere between $75,000 and $200,000. Townhouses occupy the northern edge, between Harvard and Randolph, and sell between $80,0000 to $115,000. Inventory is very low in this village, and new listings sell shortly after they hit the market. “I was talking to a lady a little while ago who said she wasted two years to get a home here, that’s how desirable it is,” says Book.

Warrensville School District and two colleges

Kids are zoned for Warrensville School District, which has a C-minus rating on Niche. Warrensville Heights Elementary serves pre-k through fifth graders and has not been rated on Niche. Sixth through eighth graders attend the C-minus rated Warrensville Heights Middle, while ninth through twelfth graders attend Warrenville Heights High. The high school has a C rating and is primarily known for its extracurricular activities. “Warrensville High has always been known for their basketball teams – boy and girls,” says Book. “The school also has an outstanding culinary program and band.”

While many people leave for college and return later in life, Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Humanities Center is a prominent trade school in the community, and Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus is a popular two-year option.

Highland Park Golf Course and Camp George Forbes

At the end of a busy day, residents spend time on the green at Highland Park Golf Course. The 36-hole course is broken into two 18-hole fairways woven through the rolling hills and patches of flat terrain.

Camp George Forbes is a prominent greenspace to throw birthday parties and feed birds by the pond. At the park’s southeast edge, the Camp George Recreation Center features a swimming pool and event space.

Big industries in 1.9 square miles

Although it's just 1.9 square miles, Highland Hills is primarily industrial land. East of Northfield Road, offices and government buildings dominate the landscape. On the west side of Warrensville Center Road, Cleveland Clinic - South Pointe Hospital provides career opportunities and emergency care.

While Highland Hills does not have its own shopping center, residents commute to nearby towns to handle their needs. Warrensville is often the first choice as it offers a BJ’s, Save A Lot and Harvard Park shopping mall. And while there are several big chains to grab a quick bite, Warrensville is home to Frederick's Wine and Dine, where mouthwatering soul food is served with a side of live entertainment.

Ways to get around

With few paved sidewalks and public transit options, Highland Hills is a driver-centric community. RTA bus routes 15 and 41 run along Harvard, but most people drive to get around. Northfield Road is the most efficient way to Interstate 480.

Annual events

Everyone has opportunities to get to know their neighbors during the annual Village Vibes Festival, where the locals, first responders and village government officials come together for music, food and entertainment. The city also partners with Warrensville to have a Memorial Day Parade.
