Afton Oaks
New homes lend an updated appeal
The neighborhood’s close community feel is due in part to the local civic group. “Because of the development happening around Afton Oaks, we work hard to maintain the neighborhood’s residential character and its greenery,” says Mark Worscheh, board member of the Afton Oaks Civic Club. The club, founded in 1955, oversees the enforcement of neighborhood covenants and the maintenance of common areas. The club also provides around-the-clock security patrols. Homes in the western end of the community sit on expansive lots. “While the original homes in the area were primarily brick ranch-styles built in the 1950s, the majority of homes in Afton Oaks are now newer and much larger constructions,” says Arteaga. These newer Craftsman, Postmodern and Mediterranean-style homes give the neighborhood an updated look laced with legacy. The eastern section of Afton Oaks is more commercial and lined with condominiums and townhouses rather than single-family homes. Expect to pay about $300,000 for a 3-bedroom condominium to $3 million for 5-bedroom Mediterranean-influenced home.Schools

Niche rates St. Johns with an A-plus and ranks its secondary school as the 13th-best private high in the United States.Golf games and whodunits

The River Oaks District is known for its luxury retailers like Hermès and Harvey Winston. The Galleria offers Neiman Marcus and Saks 5th Avenue. When it’s time to replenish the larder, Central Market in Highland Village is just the spot to pick up fresh produce, meats and wine. Local restaurants in Afton Oaks have a more relaxed feel that locals enjoy. Pop into Luling City Market for some of the best Central Texas barbecue around or visit Ragin’ Cajun for its signature seafood boils. Top it all off with a sweet treat from Amorino Gelato al Naturale, famous for its flower-shaped scoops of gelato.Rodeos and tennis

The event includes horse competitions, auctions and everything else from mutton busting to face painting. Residents can walk or drive the half mile to River Oaks Country Club in April for the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. Held here since 1931, it is one of the world’s oldest professional tennis tournaments.Getting in and around
