Quiet village living in rural Hyde Park

Set 40 miles northwest of Barre, Hyde Park is a small village within the rural town of the same name. "There's not a lot going on, but it's a beautiful space — a quaint, little town," says Zeph Bryant, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Carlson Real Estate, who has over 4 years of experience. Hyde Park is the shire town (county seat) of Lamoille County, and the county's municipal buildings are located in the village. Many residents work in the public sector, but commuting to other towns, including Stowe or Burlington, is also common. Residents also head to neighboring communities, like Morrisville, for everyday tasks, like grocery shopping and eating out.

No two homes are alike in Hyde Park

Hyde Park's homes are diverse, differing in shape, size and style from door to door. Craftsman and farmhouse styles are popular; many were built in the mid to late 20th century, but there are also a handful of historic Colonials and 21st-century custom estates. Around the village, closely spaced homes on modest lots create a suburban feel along narrow streets. On the outskirts, single-family homes along secluded, country roads with wooded, multi-acre lots are typical; some have additions like detached workshops or barns. "When you get out of town, you've got some properties with really incredible views," Bryant says. The median sale price in Hyde Park is about $370,000, compared to $325,000 in Barre and $850,000 in Stowe.

Extracurricular opportunities at Hyde Park public schools

Hyde Park is part of the Lamoille North Supervisory Union, which serves about 1,400 students. At Lamoille Union High School, juniors and seniors may take two free courses at any Vermont College. The school also has a successful chess team that's won the Annual Vermont State Scholastic Chess Championship four years in a row, from 2022 to 2025.

Vermont wildlife, scenic trails and youth sports

Wooded groves and pastoral landscapes surround Hyde Park. The scenic Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is a 93-mile route through farmlands and mature forests packed with oaks and maples. The trail's popular for jogging and cycling in the summer, and snowshoeing in the winter. Birders on the trail may spot evening grosbeaks, bank swallows and golden-crowned kinglets. Youth sports, including soccer and baseball, are played at the Hyde Park Recreation Fields; there's also ping pong at the Lanpher Memorial Library. In Morrisville, anglers can fish in Lake Lamoille for largemouth bass and chain pickerel. Nearby, the semi-private Copley Country Club offers a 9-hole course. "There's also Green River Reservoir State Park," Bryant says. "You can go canoeing, camping, hiking and biking."

Dining highlights in Hyde Park

The village has a few businesses, but shopping and dining are limited. "There's Two Sons Bakehouse in Hyde Park," Bryant says. The bakery serves artisan breads and pastries, and doubles as a restaurant with comfort classics like housemade brioche French toast for breakfast. Nearby, Ten Bends Beer is a brewery and taproom with weekly live music on Acoustic Fridays. The Speer Family Farm Store has grass-fed lamb and pasture-raised eggs, pork and poultry. Bryant says residents regularly head to Morrisville, 2 miles away, for grocery stores and more shopping and dining options.

Hyde Park's opera house and library

Built in 1781, the historic Hyde Park Opera House was originally the town hall building. Today, it's home to the Lamoille County Players, who perform plays and musicals throughout the year. The Lanpher Memorial Library hosts community gatherings year-round, including storytelling for all ages, bake sales and seasonal traditions, like Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. On Mondays, the Weekly Walks club meets at the library to stroll through the village. For children, the Mystery Ingredient Challenge is an annual competition where junior chefs get to create an original dish.

Getting around Hyde Park

Thoroughfares like Main Street are sidewalk-lined and bikeable, but residents generally drive to get around. Vermont Route 100 passes through Hyde Park, granting access to Stowe and Barre, 11 and 40 miles away, respectively. Commuters can carpool from the town's park and ride lot. Copley Hospital is 4 miles away, and Burlington International Airport is 45 miles away.

Snowy winters

Hyde Park averages about 105 inches of annual snowfall, which can cause school delays or travel disruptions.
