Close-knit suburb with a coal-mining history

Indiana Township was an industrial coal mining town in the early 1900s, but has developed into a rural suburb with well-regarded schools and access to many green spaces. “It’s filled with a bunch of cute little communities that were built many years ago,” says longtime Frazer resident Linda Pelkofer, who is also a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway The Preferred Realty. “Even though it’s very rural, it has more of a suburban feel since you’re still connected to areas like downtown. And the parks are beautiful, especially Hartwood Park.” Indiana Township stands out as a warm, welcoming neighborhood about 12 miles from Pittsburgh. “I would describe it as a close-knit community. A lot of people just know each other and are willing to help with any problems,” says Calle Zmenkowski, the assistant manager at Emmerling Ice Cream. The small-town feeling spreads throughout the area's dense woods and residential streets.

Hartwood Acres Mansion

The neighborhood offers lots of outdoor recreation. The Emmerling Community Park contains baseball and soccer fields, a playground, and pavilions that are available for reservations. The park's trails follow Deer Creek for scenic views of the stream surrounded by maple trees. At Hartwood Park, just 2 miles away, there are plenty of walking and horseback riding trails and a dog park. It’s also home to the Hartwood Acres Mansion, a historic Tudor-style landmark that’s popular for events like weddings. The nearest golf course is Fox Chapel Golf Club. As for indoor recreation, the Pittsburgh Indoor Sports Arena gives residents a place to play basketball, pickleball and soccer in its sprawling building. The arena also has adult and youth leagues and day camps.

A-plus rated Fox Chapel schools

Fox Chapel Area School District serves children in the township and earns an A-plus from Niche. Kids can attend Hartwood Elementary School, which receives an A-plus. “The school district brings people in. It’s a big selling point for me,” Pelkofer says. Students may move on to Dorseyville Middle School, which also earns an A-plus, before advancing to Fox Chapel Area High School. The school receives an A-plus from Niche and focuses on teaching critical reading and writing skills. The private Shady Side Academy earns an A-plus from Niche. Churches nearby include Trinity United Church of Christ, Dorseyville Alliance Church and Faith United Methodist Church.

Traditional homes with woodsy backyards

In Indiana Township, homes sit on manicured lots surrounded by Japanese maple and daylily bushes and forests full of pine and maple trees. Pets can sprint through mowed lawns, and children play in backyards. Traditional and ranch-style homes with decks or patios range from $300,000 to $700,000, depending on the number of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Shopping and dining at Hartwood Town Center

Most grocery runs happen at the Aldi or Walmart near the Pittsburgh Mills Mall. While the mall is a popular shopping destination, most residents visit Hartwood Towne Centre to shop and dine all in the same place. The center includes a B&Z Deli and Dive Bar and Grill. Pelkofer says there aren't a lot of dining options in the township, but the ones here are mostly family-owned. Pizza Roma offers a full Italian menu while Grieco’s Carefree Inn serves seafood. For dessert, residents head to Emmerling Ice Cream for a sweet pick-me-up and a mood boost from the friendly employees. “We see a lot of familiar faces every day,” Zmenkowski says. “The business of ice cream is a way to pick someone’s day up.” The menu includes peanut parfaits and ice cream-filled taco shells.

Hartwood Acres Amphitheater

Concerts are held every Sunday at Hartwood Acres Amphitheater during the summer. There’s also a car show every Father’s Day, Pelkofer says. No matter the season, there’s lots to do downtown, like watching sports games at Acrisure Stadium or taking in interesting exhibits at The Carnegie Science Center.

Commuting to Pittsburgh on Route 28

Residents must hop on State Route 28 to reach downtown Pittsburgh, usually a 25-minute drive. The Pittsburgh Northeast Airport is right outside the neighborhood, but most people use Pittsburgh International Airport, which is 30 miles away. Indiana Township has a CAP Index crime score of 1, compared to the national average of 4.
