'Darling downtown' of Irvington
After more than 150 years, Irvington has lost none of its historic charm or community feel. “They have a strong community, especially when it comes to events,” says Bethany Schultz, a Realtor with United Real Estate Indianapolis, who has been selling homes in the area for over five years. “It’s just really fun and it’s got a darling downtown that’s just a few blocks long.” This large, verdant district lies about 5 miles east of downtown Indianapolis, with Washington Street running straight through the middle from west to east. Irvington’s long history led the neighborhood – along with over 2,000 of its homes – to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s the former home of Butler University, though the current United Methodist Church is one of the only university buildings still intact today. A few of the oldest homes here, including the Graham-Stephenson House on University Avenue, are rumored to be haunted, making it a popular destination for ghost lovers.

Neighbors go all in for Halloween
With a historic neighborhood like Irvington comes grand traditions, including the annual Historic Irvington Halloween Festival. This weeklong celebration involves residents and local organizations in activities like a house decoration contest. Along with the typical pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating, events throughout the week include a masquerade ball, horror shorts movie night, spooky organ concert, blood drive, parade, a zombie bike ride and more. The neighborhood also holds costume and Halloween house decoration contests. Washington Street even shuts down for a full day at the end of the festival to accommodate food vendors and trick-or-treaters.
Shopping, dining on the downtown strip
Aldi is the popular grocery in Irvington, conveniently located on Washington Street. A CVS Pharmacy is nearby, where people go for medications and scheduled prescriptions. Many locally owned eateries and shops are clustered on and around the small downtown strip, such as Strange Bird, which has tiki bar stylings and masterful ramen dishes. Chicago Beef & Dog Company serves loaded hot dogs, Italian beef and Polish sausage styled a dozen different ways, while Indy-area chain Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza dishes out local favorites like the Cheese Louise pie. Residents visit Landlocked Baking Company for its different daily pastries and a full coffee and cocktail menu, all within a tropical, plant-filled setting. On the weekends, neighbors visit the Indianapolis Speedrome for car, bike and go-kart racing competitions. Afterwards, people have a nightcap at Kitley Inn, which also has live music every Saturday.

Ellenberger Park has welcomed outdoor enthusiasts and athletes for over 100 years, featuring a public pool, playgrounds, and tennis, baseball and football facilities. The entire six years I've lived here, I have experienced homophobic spurs and racist spurs on average twice a year. Always on Washington Street though, never in the neighborhoods. I would still however, recommend living here because there's really no crime that I have heard of. It is a safe neighborhood to walk in, i walk my cat all the time. But if you're dark skinned or gay, or both, just keep an eye out cause I've never experienced hate as much as I have living here.
