Old traditions and new homes in Indianapolis suburb
Community spirit is front and center in Wanamaker, a suburb in the southeast area of Indianapolis. From youth sports leagues to neighborhood festivals, residents have several ways to get involved and connect with their neighbors. Southeastern Avenue serves as the neighborhood's Main Street, where longtime businesses provide vital products and services. Some also support the youth baseball league. "I think that's the draw to Wanamaker — it has a small-town feeling within a larger area," says Nathan Baurley, a broker with Best Life Realty Group. With new businesses and homes popping up, residents, both new and old, are encouraged to participate in Wanamaker's traditions. "It’s definitely an established neighborhood, but it's making improvements to continue to provide services to the community," Baurley says. When downtown Indianapolis calls, it's a straight 9-mile trip down Southeastern Avenue.

Midcentury ranches and new construction
Wanamaker has a mix of vintage homes and new construction. Older homes include midcentury ranches, with a variety of other styles like Dutch Colonial farmhouses. Many new construction homes are located in the neighborhood's southwest corner. They tend to be larger, featuring three to five bedrooms, with a combination of brick and vinyl on the exterior. Many mimic Craftsman features, such as angled porch columns. This newer part of the neighborhood has neat rows of young trees and narrow sidewalks flanking the streets. Prices may start around $230,000 for a midcentury home around 1,200 square feet. Newer homes that are around 3,000 square feet can cost upwards of $500,000.

Kids and adults alike get involved in Wanamaker's youth sports leagues. Parents and community members set up their lawn chairs at the outfield fence to support the teams.
Nearby parks offer outdoor amenities for all to enjoy. At Wildwood Park, kids can enjoy the interesting play structures including a netted swing set and netted climbing structure. The splash pad is a popular spot in the summer, with a large bucket splashing cool water over the area. Locals walk their dogs on the paved path at Wolf Run Park or enjoy lunch under the picnic shelter. The open field is big enough for a game of soccer.

I live nearby and it's just a very small town with not much to do. There are a few places to eat and just a few shops that cover the essentials. It's a good place to pop into whenever you just don't want to drive ten to fifteen minutes to the nearest shopping area for just a few things.
