West Indianapolis is a community with industrial roots
Across the White River from downtown Indianapolis is West Indianapolis, a longtime haven for industry, community and hometown charm. West Indianapolis is a historically working-class neighborhood, currently home to about 7,000 people. It was built around the Union Stockyards in the late 1800s, ushering a wave of blue-collar industrial workers. The stockyards ceased operation in the 1970s but were replaced by warehouses and industrial centers for several large firms: Eli Lilly and Company, Rolls-Royce and chemical manufacturer Vertellus all remain major employers in the area. Many trucking lots are also located around the neighborhood.
Homes styles reflect historic working-class character
Home styles in West Indianapolis reflect the working-class lifestyle that defined the area throughout the last 150 years. Prospective buyers may find World War II-era tract homes with aluminum siding, two-level Victorian models, ramblers and brick bungalows all around the neighborhood, with some models built in the 19th century. House prices in the area rarely exceed the $300,000 mark, even with newer or more well-maintained models. Lots sit closely together and are connected by sidewalks, making it easy for many residents to walk to friends’ houses, school, the park or other gathering places.

West Indianapolis' location right on the White River makes the neighborhood a great spot for locals who love to get outside and enjoy the gentle rushing of the water. They can catch either fish or a stunning glimpse of the sunrise over the Indy skyline from the Rock Flat. Or they can take a stroll on the White River Trail, which crosses into downtown from the neighborhood. Another waterway, Eagle Creek, runs through the middle of the neighborhood from north to south, as does the 21-mile Eagle Creek Trail, which serious bikers or runners can take all the way up to Zionsville. A handful of public parks also operate in the area, including Rhodius Park, where visitors can enjoy athletic facilities and, during the summer, take a dip in the public pool.
The entrance to TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park welcomes visitors with a clean, modern sign—your first hint that good music and good times are just ahead.

Lived in West Indianapolis (10th/I465) for 3 years and during my first year my apartment was robbed. The West side is the only place where I've seen several rebel flags flown from a driver's pick up truck. The positive I enjoyed were international foods available such as Cuban, Japanese and Ethiopian.

I live in a subdivision with nosy neighbors. Neighbors who think they can walk on my property and do whatever THEY think needs to be done. They've never asked my permission. I've lived here 26 years and I'm currently looking to move. I hope the new owners have 5 wild kids, 4 giant dogs, and a bunch of missing teeth.
